Deibert Wins Woodcrest Invitational on First Playoff Hole

The 38th Annual Woodcrest Invitational, sponsored by Hill International and Woodcrest CC, was played July 27 - 28, 2009 at Woodcrest Country Club in Cherry Hill, NJ.  The format was changed this year and the 37 professionals each played the first round with four amateurs who played a shamble format while the professional played his own ball.  Unlike previous years, the professionals played a second round on day 2 to decide the Championship.

In years past, it was only a one round tournament.  The winning Pro-Am team from yesterday was the team headed by professional George Frake from Little Mill CC.  He and his amateur partners Jeff Herskowitz, Bob Nix, Gary Debartolomeo and Hank Baskett shot a 36-under par 106 for the round.  They beat the team of George Forster (Radnor Valley CC) and his amateurs Mike Gorsen, Elliott Teitlebaum, Brian Snyder and Steve Schwartz by two shots, (-34 - 108).  In the professional tournament Stu Ingraham (M Golf Range) was leading after the first round with a 4-under par 67.  He was followed closely by Bala Golf Club's Bill Walker (-3-68) and host professional Rich Smith who shot a 2-under par 69.

The leaders would not hold their advantage after the second round.  Terry Hertzog (Bent Creek CC) and Travis Deibert (Commonwealth National GC) shot a 69 and 68 respectively, both finishing the 36-hole Invitational at 2-under par 140 forcing a sudden death playoff on the eighteenth hole.  Deibert parred the hole while Hertzog three-putted for a bogey to give Deibert the championship and his second sudden death win of the year.  Deibert also won a sudden death playoff at the Haverford Trust Classic earlier in the year.
