Ladies and Gentlemen;
I am both humbled and honored to have been elected the President of the Philadelphia Section at the Fall meeting. As I begin this 2 year journey with you, I look to our past and our future. We have been very fortunate to have been led by some amazing individuals over the past few decades. We have National Past Presidents, National Award winners, and so many other respected leaders that have paved the way for the Philadelphia Section to be one of the best in the country.
I would like to thank our Honorary President, Jim Smith Jr., for the great job that he did over the past 2 years. Jim was instrumental in coming up with some great ideas to keep our financials in order during a very difficult economic time. As he moves closer to the Past President’s table, I would like to thank him for opening up the lines of communication between the Executive Board and the membership. I’m sure our members felt more informed than ever before and felt comfortable to send an email to our leadership to offer a suggestion or comment. Thank you Jim, we all appreciate your efforts!
As I look to the future, I think about what I said at the Fall meeting and how the next 2 years are not about me, but how they are about you. We are faced with uncertain and difficult times in our business. What are you going to do to stand out and make a difference? I challenge each of you to try and do something different over the next 2 years.
I offered 3 suggestions at the meeting:
Do something to improve as a PGA Golf Professional
Do something for your staff
Do something for the Section
I’m sure you can come up with other ideas, but do something you have never done before. Do that one thing you have always wanted to do, but never got around to.
I tried something different at the Section Meeting. I went around the golf course and met every group that was playing in the event. It was great to see a lot of friends that I have made over the years, and I also met 29 golf professionals that I didn’t know.
I am certainly going to do my part over the next 2 years to represent this Section in a professional and positive way, and to try to get involved in new and different ways. I will push our Section leaders to do the same. Imagine the changes we could make as a whole if each of us did 3 things. I would love to hear some stories about what you have done to make a change and make a difference. Please send me an email if you want to share some ideas or thoughts. You can reach me at Lefty67@aol.com. Have a great fall.
