Trevor Bensel, PGA, Captures 2022 National Car Rental Philadelphia Assistant PGA Professional Championship

Bernville, Pa. (September 12, 2022) — Trevor Bensel, PGA, of Sandy Run Golf Club in Oreland, Pennsylvania, winner of the 2022 National Car Rental Philadelphia Assistant PGA Professional Championship at Heidelberg Country Club, will lead five fellow Section PGA Professionals to compete in the 2022 National Car Rental Assistant PGA Professional Championship, November 17-20, at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida. This is Bensel’s second victory at this championship, having previously won at Chester Valley G.C. in 2019.

Bensel led recently-crowned Philadelphia PGA Professional Champion and 2017 Section Assistant Champion Brian Bergstol, Shawnee Inn & Golf Resort in Shawnee on Delaware, Pa.; and Zac Oakley, Bidermann G.C. in Wilmington, Del.; by two strokes after his 3-under-par opening round of 67.

Play was suspended at 4:32 p.m. ET due to severe weather, and the Section’s Tournament Committee ultimately cancelled the final round and shortened the championship to 18 holes, as storms threatened as darkness approached.

Our 2022 champion started with a double bogey on his first hole of the day, followed by a bogey on No. 5, but finished strongly with birdies on Nos. 8 and 9, and four more in the last five holes, including three in a row on Nos. 14-16.

“My first tee shot went [out of bounds], which was not the best way to start,” Bensel said of his round. “I figured I had plenty of holes left to get it done. I tried to keep the ball in front of me and made a few good putts coming down the stretch.

“It was fun to play with Brian and Zac,” he continued. “They are good friends of mine, and we feed off each other when we’re all playing well.”

Bensel went on to thank the Sandy Run membership for their constant support, Titleist, FootJoy, Holderness & Bourne, and Makefield Putters.

In addition to having his name engraved on the perpetual George Izett Memorial Trophy, and the winner’s check, Bensel will be joined at the 2022 National Car Rental Assistant PGA Professional Championship in Florida, by Bergstol, Oakley, Alex Knoll, Glen Brook G.C. in Strousburg, Pa.; Andrew Turner, Berkshire C.C. in Reading, Pa.; and Jeff Fick, Moselem Springs G.C. in Fleetwood, Pa.; Turner and Fick earned their spots via a sudden death playoff after the severe weather moved through the area. Bergstol had previously secured his spot at PGA G.C. via his second place finish in the 2021 National Car Rental Assistant PGA Professional Championship.

Steve Sanderson, Pine Valley (N.J.) G.C.; and Jacob Woodman, Aronimink G.C. in Newtown Square, Pa.; will be the first and second alternates, followed by Rocco Sgrillo, John F. Byrne G.C. in Philadelphia.

The National Car Rental Assistant PGA Professional Championship brings together a field of 132 contestants representing the PGA of America’s 41 nationwide Sections. All rounds will be played on the Wanamaker Course. A cut after 36 holes of play to the low 70 scorers and ties will be made.

Begun in 1977, the National Car Rental Assistant PGA Professional Championship is modeled after the PGA Professional Championship, with a field of PGA Professionals and PGA Associates who advanced through 41 Section Championships conducted from May through October this year.

If eligibility is met and maintained, the champion earns a berth in the the 2023 PGA Professional Championship, April 30 – May 3, at Twin Warriors and Santa Ana Pueblo Golf Clubs in Santa Ana Pueblo, New Mexico.

The 2022 Philadelphia Assistant PGA Professional Championship is hosted by Dick Smith Sr., PGA, presented by National Car Rental, and supported by Srixon, Cleveland Golf, XXIO, Asics, the PGA Tour, and Ohana Farm LLC. The Philadelphia PGA Section and its PGA Professionals thank our host, Heidelberg Country Club, its members, management, host PGA Professionals, and staff, as well as our partners, as the event would not have been possible without their support.

Rich Steinmetz Captures 2022 Philadelphia Senior PGA Professional Championship Presented by Cadillac

Medford, N.J. (June 14, 2022) — Rich Steinmetz, PGA, of Spring Ford Country Club in Royersford, Pa., captured the 2022 Philadelphia PGA Professional Championship Presented by Cadillac at Medford Village Country Club by one stroke over Brian Kelly of Bucknell Golf Club in Lewisburg, Pa., and Terry Hertzog of Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa. He finished the championship with rounds of 69-70–139, 5-under-par. Steinmetz will lead five other Philadelphia PGA Members to compete in the 34th Senior PGA Professional Championship presented by Cadillac, October 13-16, at Twin Warriors and Santa Ana Golf Clubs in Santa Ana Pueblo, N.M.

The 2022 Philadelphia PGA Professional Championship Presented by Cadillac is also supported by Golf Channel and Jani-King.

Entering the final round, Steinmetz held a one stroke lead over Kelly and Greg Farrow of Deerwood Country Club in Mount Holly, N.J., but had to wait an hour and forty minutes longer to tee off No. 1, as severe weather delayed the competition. Once he began his round, he came out firing, making birdie on Nos. 1 and 3.

The top of leaderboard, however, began to tighten, as Hertzog started to make birdies of his own, ultimately finishing the event at 4-under-par. Kelly had a bit of an up and down round which featured two bogeys, a double bogey, and six birdies, including four in a row on Nos. 13-16, to finish with rounds of 70-70–140, tying Hertzog.

Steinmetz had made 10-straight pars until he reached No. 17, where he hit it close to the hole on his approach, and made the birdie putt on the 365-yard par-4.

“I hit it really well,” Steinmetz said of his final round. “I put myself in good spots off the tee, which made it easy, tee-to-green. I hit it close a lot, which helped; it was tough to read these greens. They’re really tricky.”

Steinmetz went on to thank the folks at his home facility, Spring Ford Country Club: the members, and staff, for their support and allowing him to get out and play in competitive events like this championship. He also thanked host club Medford Village Country Club.

His win was even more special, considering it was his first start in a senior championship, as he turned 50 years old in December 2021.

PGA Members joining Steinmetz, Kelly, Hertzog, and Farrow in New Mexico include Dave McNabb, Applebrook G.C.; and Brendon Post, University of Delaware. Eric Kennedy, Overbrook G.C., is the first alternate, George Forster, Radnor Valley C.C., is second alternate, followed by Eddie Perrino, C.C. of York, and Dave Quinn, Laurel Creek C.C.

With his win, Steinmetz became the 13th PGA Member to win both the Philadelphia PGA Professional Championship and the Philadelphia Senior PGA Professional Championship, joining: Dave McNabb, John Pillar, Dave Quinn, Stu Ingraham, George Forster, Stan Dudas, Dick Hendrickson, Marty Furgol, George Fazio, Rod Munday, Bud Lewis, and Clarence Ehresman.

The top 35 finishers in the 34th Senior PGA Professional Championship Presented by Cadillac will earn a spot in the 2023 KitchenAid Senior PGA Professional Championship, scheduled to be played May 2023, on PGA Frisco’s Fields Ranch East course in Frisco, Texas.

Marjorie Jones, the Shore Club, took top honors in the Super Senior Division, finishing at 8-over-par, to better Patrick Keefe, Frog Hollow G.C., by seven strokes.

The 2022 Philadelphia PGA Professional Championship is presented by Cadillac, and supported by Golf Channel, and Jani-King. The Philadelphia PGA Section and its PGA Professionals thank our partners, Medford Village C.C., its membership, management, staff, and host PGA Professional staff, as the event would not have been possible without their support.

2020 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship Set for Oct. 6-11 Without Spectators Onsite

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (Sept. 11, 2020) 一 The PGA of America today announced that the 2020 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship ー one of five Major Championships on the LPGA Tour ー will be contested without spectators onsite, October 6-11, at Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.

The decision to play without spectators was made in coordination with Pennsylvania Department of Health, Newtown Township and the Chester County Department of Health, with the health and well-being of all involved as the top priority.

The PGA of America will continue to monitor COVID-19 developments and work in concert with the leading state and township public health authorities, as well as the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, up to and through Championship Week.

“We’re grateful to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Newtown Township and Delaware County for their partnership in conducting the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship,” said PGA of America President Suzy Whaley. “We’re excited to showcase historic Aronimink Golf Club, an incredible venue located in a community that has been a long-time supporter of women’s golf and the LPGA. And while we will, unfortunately, be unable to have spectators with us at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, we’re certain that the talented players in the field will inspire those watching around the globe.”

Founded in 1896, Aronimink has hosted a number of significant golf events during its storied history, including the 1962 PGA Championship (won by Gary Player). The PGA Championship will return to Aronimink in 2026.

With the playing of the 2020 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, Aronimink will be the first venue to stage each of the PGA of America’s three rotating major championships (PGA Championship, KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship, KPMG Women’s PGA Championship).

“While we’ll miss our spectators at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship this year, we will still impact young girls and boys all over the world, thanks to our worldwide television coverage,” said LPGA Commissioner Mike Whan. “This event has always been bigger than just golf. It impacts leaders and future leaders, lifting dreams while it changes stereotypes. A huge thank you to KPMG and the PGA of America for their willingness and persistence to ensure that the impact of this Championship is not diminished despite the challenges we face this year!”

In three of the last four years, the top 100 players on the LPGA Official Money List have played in the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, which again features one of the highest purses in women’s golf.  The Championship will be broadcast on NBC and Golf Channel and will include 16 hours of live coverage from Aronimink.

The field also will once again include the top eight finishers in the previous year’s LPGA Teaching and Club Professional National Championship, whether they are PGA or LPGA members, as well as the 2020 PGA Women’s Stroke Play Champion.

The KPMG Women’s PGA Championship has built on the history and tradition of the LPGA Championship, which began in 1955 and is the second-oldest major in women’s golf.

The event is held in conjunction with the KPMG Women’s Leadership Summit and the KPMG Future Leaders Program – all focused on the development, advancement and empowerment of women on and off the golf course.

In the coming days, those who purchased corporate hospitality packages, tickets, or signed up to volunteer for the 2020 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship will be contacted to facilitate refunds.

Prior to its postponement on April 29, the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship was originally scheduled for play June 23-28.

Knoll Leads by Five Shots Heading into the Championship’s Final Round

Tournament Leaderboard

Read Day 1 Recap Here

Philadelphia, Pa. – Once again bright skies and seasonable temperatures greeted players at the Union League Golf Club at Torresdale and Riverton Country Club for the second round of the 98th Philadelphia PGA Professional Championship. For round two, players switched courses, meaning those players who played at the Union League on day one moved to Riverton Country Club on day two and vice versa.

Looking to piggyback off his record setting day one, Alex Knoll (Glen Brook GC) was the first group off at Riverton Country Club. While he did not set another course record, Knoll did post an impressive 2-under (69) in difficult morning conditions. Knoll had three birdies against one bogey to reach 10-under (131) after 36-holes and giving him a sizeable lead heading into the final round.

Two players in the field made major moves up the leaderboard after posting low scores on day two of the Championship. The first player to make a move was Brendon Post (Univ of Delaware). Playing at the Union League, Post posted four birdies, including a stretch of three in four holes from 10-13, before a lone bogey on the par-5 16th hole dropped him back to 3-under for the day and 5-under (136) for the Championship, placing him in solo second place five shots behind Knoll.

The biggest move of the day came from Ryan Lagergren (Stonewall) who posted the best round of the day, a 7-under (64) at Riverton Country Club. Lagergren had six birdies and an eagle on the par-4 18th hole to help him overcome an early bogey. Lagergren’s 7-under second round helped to erase a 2-over (73) in his opening round at the Union League and vaulted him into third place alone.

The final round of the 98th Philadelphia PGA Professional Championship will get underway at 8:30 AM at the Union League Golf Club at Torresdale with the Championship leaders, Knoll, Post and Lagergen set to get their final rounds underway at 12:15 pm.

In addition to the William B. Packer trophy, awarded to the Philadelphia PGA Professional Champion, the tournament also serves as a qualifier into the 53rd PGA Professional Championship set to be held at the Omni Barton Creek Resort & Spa in Austin, Texas, April 26-29, 2020.

The Philadelphia PGA has 11 qualifying spots into next year’s event. With five players currently tied for the eleventh and final qualifying spot and another twenty players within four shots of the last spot there is plenty up for grabs in tomorrow’s final round.

For complete coverage of the 98th Philadelphia PGA Professional Championship be sure to follow the action on philadelphia.pga.com or via social media on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook (@PhiladelphiaPGA) or the #PPGAChamp.

Alex Knoll has Record Day at the Union League Golf Club at Torresdale

The first round of the 98th Philadelphia PGA Professional Championship got underway early on Tuesday, September 17. The three-day, 54-hole championship will be held at host facility Union League Golf Club at Torresdale as well as secondary facility Riverton Country Club.

The Philadelphia PGA Professional Championship is one of the premier events on the Philadelphia PGA calendar. At stake this week is the Section’s top prize the William B. Packer trophy, awarded to the Championship’s top finisher. Additionally, Professionals are competing for one of 11 spots into next year’s 53rd PGA Professional Championship to be held at the Omni Barton Creek Resort & Spa in Austin, Texas April 26-29, 2020.

For much of the day it looked as though the two courses would be the story of the Championship’s opening round. For much of the afternoon the best score posted at the Union League was even par (70). While scores at Riverton Country Club were slightly lower, the best number posted on day one was from a trio of players who finished at 3-under (68).

However, playing in the last group of the day at Union League, Alex Knoll (Glen Brook Golf Club) was about to embark on a record setting day. After making a par on his opening hole, Knoll birdied the short par-4 second hole. After a par on the third hole, Knoll found his second birdie of the day on the par-3 fourth hole.

“The course played tough today,” commented Knoll on his opening round. “I know it sounds cliché, but I tried to just play one shot at a time. I wanted to keep the ball below the hole to give myself a chance at birdie.”

After a string of pars to close out his outward nine, Knoll really got his round going on the back nine. Opening with an eagle on the par-5 tenth hole, Knoll then made par on the long par-3 eleventh hole. After consecutive birdies on holes 12 and 13, Knoll parred the par-3 14th hole and was sitting at 6-under as he got set to play par-4 15h hole.

“I knew I had something special going today,” said Knoll. “I tried to use my experience from last year’s PGA Professional Championship to calm my nerves.”

Once again Knoll posted consecutive birdies on the back nine after finding red figures on holes 15 and 16 and was now 8-under, five shots ahead of his closest competitor and eight shots better than those players playing Union League in round one.

After a bogey on the par-3 17th hole, his only blemish of the day, Knoll quickly righted the ship and found the fairway with his tee shot on the closing hole. After his approach shot found the green, Knoll and a 20’ putt for birdie and an opening round 62. Like his did for most of the day, Knoll confidently stepped over his putt and drained one more birdie, his seventh of the day.

“This is by far my lowest competitive round,” said Knoll of his 62. “I have gone low in a couple Pro-Ams but nothing like this.

Not only does Knoll’s 8-under (62) put him in great position after the Championship’s opening round, it also places him in Union League Golf Club history. Knoll’s 8-under round set the competitive course record at Union League, a mark previously held by the legendary Sam Snead who had posted a (64) in the Henry Hearst Invitational held in 1941.

“It will be a cool story to tell, saying I broke a course record once held by Sam Snead,” said Knoll. “However, my goal is still the same, to qualify for the PGA Professional Championship. There is still 36-holes to play and I can’t’ let myself get to think too far ahead.”

Knoll heads into the Championship’s second round with a five-shot lead over past champions Rich Steinmetz (Spring Ford Country Club) and Stu Ingraham (M Golf Range) as well as Dave Fields. All players will now switch courses for the Championship’s second round. At the end of round two, the field will be cut to the low 60 players and ties who will return to the Union League Golf Club at Torresdale on Thursday for the third and final round.

John Pillar Captures Philadelphia Senior PGA Professional Championship

John Pillar Captures Philadelphia Senior PGA Professional Championship;
Earns Berth in 31st Senior PGA Professional Championship

Full Tournament Leaderboard

(Malvern, Pa.) (August 20, 2019) – John Pillar of (Hawley, Pa.), winner of the Philadelphia Section Senior PGA Professional Championship August 19-20, 2019 at Applebrook Golf Club will lead seven Section PGA Professionals to compete Oct. 3-6, in the 31st Senior PGA Professional Championship.

The national Championship, presented by Cadillac and supported by Golf Channel and John Deere, will be held at Omni Barton Creek Resort and Spa in Austin, Texas.

Pillar turned in a winning total of 8-under-par 134 to capture the Philadelphia Section Senior PGA Professional Championship presented by Cadillac. Bob Lennon of (Wilmington, Del.) finished three strokes back at 5-under-par 137. They are joined by Brian Kelly of (Lewisburg, Pa.), Terry Hertzog of (Lititz, Pa.), George Forster of (Blue Bell, Pa.), Dave Quinn of (Marlton, NJ), Eddie Perrino of (Mountain Top, Pa.).

“I feel grateful to join the list of Philadelphia PGA Senior Champions,” commented Pillar of his win. “We have such a strong contingent of senior players in our Section and to be considered in the same sentence as those legends is truly an honor. “I’d be remiss if I didn’t recognize everyone at Woodloch Springs, especially my staff, who do such an outstanding job at home allowing me to compete in these events. I also need to thank the membership and staff of Applebrook Golf Club for providing such an outstanding venue for us to play these past two days. I am looking forward to the National Championship and playing with the best players from across the country.”

Pillar now joins a short list of players who have won both the Philadelphia PGA Professional Championship (2009) and Philadelphia PGA Senior Championship.

The Senior PGA Professional Championship brings together a field of 264 contestants representing the PGA of America’s 41 nationwide Sections and features a total purse of $300,000. The first two rounds will be conducted on the Foothills and Coore Crenshaw Courses. The first cut will be made after 36 holes of play to the low 90 scorers and ties. The second cut will be made after 54 holes of play to the low 70 scorers and ties. The final two rounds will be played on the Foothills Course.

Designed by Tom Fazio, the Foothills Course was recently ranked as one of the top courses in Texas by Golf Magazine. The course is protected by cliffs, waterfalls and creeks, making for a beautiful, scenic round, but also emphasizes the importance of accuracy. Drives from the elevated tee boxes must be precise to hit the fairways, and even more so when approaching the small greens. Previously, the Foothills Course was home to the PGA Tour Champions Legends of Golf tournament from 1990-1994.

A collaboration between course architect Bill Coore and two-time Masters Champion, Ben Crenshaw, the Coore Crenshaw Course is designed with the ideology that nature is the best architect. Although the holes feature lush, wide fairways, the dense trees to their sides will swallow any ball that misses its mark. However, the real challenge is found on the large, undulated greens that are sure to stump and frustrate players. The course’s beauty is really seen on the signature 18th hole. Running slightly uphill, approach shots must carry a creek to the low-lying green which is designed to appear as though it was carved into the hillside.

Begun in 1989, the Senior PGA Professional Championship is modeled after the PGA Professional Championship, with a field of 50-and-older senior PGA Professionals who advanced through 41 Section Championships conducted from June through August this year.

The top 35 finishers in the national Championship earn a berth in the 81st KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship, which will be conducted in May 21-24, 2020, at Harbor Shores in Benton Harbor, Michigan.

The top five finishers earn an exemption into the final stage of the 2020 PGA Tour Champions National Finals in November 2019. Since its debut, many participants in the Senior PGA Professional Championship have used their success in the event as a springboard to a PGA Tour Champions career.

Billy Stewart Uses Late Surge to Capture His First Philadelphia PGA Professional Championship

Concordville. PA – September 21, 2018 – Billy Stewart (The ACE Club), is the winner of the 97th Philadelphia PGA Professional Championship, at Concord Country Club. Stewart will lead 12 Philadelphia PGA Professionals to compete in the 52nd PGA Professional Championship, next April 28 – May 1, 2019 at Belfair in Bluffton, South Carolina.

Stewart came into the third and final round of the Championship with a four shot lead but as he made his way around the Flynn designed course he got off to a slow start. Through sixteen holes Stewart had posted 15 pars and 1 bogey and was sitting at 5-under for the Championship. However, Stewart saved his best for the final two holes. On the seventeenth hole, Stewart made a lengthy downhill putt for birdie. While on the eighteenth Stewart reached the closing par-5 in two and after two putts he carded his second consecutive birdie bringing him to 7-under (207) for the Championship.

While a number of players gave it their best shot throughout the day, only one managed to temporarily grab the lead. Stu Ingraham (M Golf Range) found himself at the top of the leaderboard after the twelfth hole, thanks in large part to the four birdies he had made up to that point. However, a bogey on the sixteenth hole coupled with birdies by Stewart on holes 17 & 18 ultimately dropped Ingraham from the top spot and a chance at his third Philadelphia PGA Championship although it was good enough for a solo second place finish.

The biggest move of the day came from Brian Hollins (Links Golf Club). As play began on day three, Hollins found himself at 2-over and in 22nd place. However, when play ended Hollins had moved up nineteen spots after he posted a championship best 5-under (66) moving him from 22nd place into solo third place.

When all was said and done Stewart was able to walk away as the Champion of the 97th Philadelphia PGA Professional Championship, the first of his career. Along with Ingraham and Hollins, Stewart will be joined by Mark Sheftic (Merion Golf Club), Mike Ladden (Whitford Country Club), Rusty Harbold (Philadelphia Cricket Club), George Forster (Radnor Valley Country Club), Terry Hertzog (Country Club of York), Rich Steinmetz (Spring Ford Country Club), Alex Knoll (Bethlehem Golf Club), Mark Anderson (Philadelphia Cricket Club) and Ashley Grier (Overbrook Golf Club), the only female professional playing in the Championship, who birdied the first sudden-death playoff hole to win a spot in the National event next year.  She has already earned a spot in the KPMG  Women’s PGA Championship also in 2019.

Billy Stewart Grabs 36-Hole Lead at 97th Philadelphia PGA Professional Championship

Concordville, Pa. – In somewhat of an anomaly the September rains were not in the forecast for a second consecutive day as players got set for the second round of the 97th Philadelphia PGA Professional Championship. For round two, players switched courses, meaning those players who played Concord Country Club on day one moved to Whitford Country Club on day two and vice versa.

After opening with a 1-under (70) at Concord Country Club, Billy Stewart (The ACE Club) knew he left a couple shots out there. However, as Stewart made his way around Whitford Country Club, he capitalized on every opportunity he found. Stewart posted two birdies on his outward nine and added five additional birdies coming back to the clubhouse, but a bogey on the par-4 18th hole dropped him back to 5-under (67) for the day and 6-under (137) for the Championship.

“For me I tried to limit any mistakes and just play my game,” said Stewart of his second round. “I was able to make a lot of putts which always helps. I got it going on the back nine and even though I made a bogey on the last hole I still feel really good about my round today.”

The player sitting just behind Stewart   is no stranger to Philadelphia PGA Championships. Stu Ingraham (M Golf Range), is a two time winner of the Philadelphia PGA Professional Championship and, after carding a second round 3-under (68), he has positioned himself to make a run at a third Championship crown. Ingraham made his way around Concord Country Club carding five birdies and only two bogeys to get to 3-under (140) for the Championship.

There are a pair of players who find themselves just four shots back as they head into the third and final round. The first to reach 2-under for the Championship was Dave Quinn (Philmont Country Club). Quinn started day two at 2-under after posting an opening round (70) at Whitford Country Club. Quinn got off to a fast start in round two with four birdies through eleven holes but a tough stretch on holes 12-14 ultimately dropped him back to even par for the day keeping him at 2-under for the Championship.

The second player to reach 2-under for the Championship was Jeff Fick (Chapel Hill Golf Club). Fick headed into round two at even par after posting a 71 at Concord CC in the opening round. Fick had better luck in round two as he found himself 3-under for the day and the Championship as he played the par-3 17th hole. Unfortunately for Fick he carded his lone bogey of the day dropping him back into a third place tie at 2-under (141).

Overnight leader Rusty Harbold (Philadelphia Cricket Club) was unable to capture the magic that propelled him into the lead after 18-holes. Harbold carded a 5-over (76) at Concord Country Club dropping him back to 1-over (144) for the Championship. Despite losing the lead, Harbold is still in prime position to grab one of the twelve spots that are up for grabs in the 52nd PGA Professional Championship.

With nine players currently tied for the twelfth and final qualifying spot and another twelve within two shots of the last spot, tomorrow’s final round is shaping up to have a lot of fireworks.

The final round of the 97th Philadelphia PGA Professional Championship will get underway at 8:00 AM at Concord Country Club with players going off of both tees and the leaders teeing off at 9:40 from the first tee.

Philadelphia Cricket Club’s Rusty Harbold Sets Pace at 97th Philadelphia PGA Professional Championship

Full Tournament Leaderboard

Concordville, Pa. – After heavy rains delayed the start of the 97th Philadelphia PGA Professional Championship more than 24 hours, the opening round got underway on Wednesday, September 19 at both Concord Country Club and Whitford Country Club. The field for the first round was split between the two facilities.

The Philadelphia PGA Professional Championship is a must play event for all Sectional Professionals. At stake this week is the Section’s top prize the William B. Packer trophy, awarded to the Championship’s top finisher. Additionally, Professionals are competing for one of 12 spots into next year’s 52nd PGA Professional Championship at Belfair in South Carolina.

Playing early in the day at the Championship’s secondary course, Whitford Country Club, Rusty Harbold (Philadelphia Cricket Club) carded, what was ultimately, the best score of the opening round. Harbold had an up and down opening nine holes reflected in only a single par on his outward nine. On the other eight holes, Harbold traded four birdies and four bogeys and ultimately made the turn at even par. As he played his way back to the clubhouse, Harbold managed to get things dialed in as he posted five birdies against only one bogey to finish with a 4-under (68).

“It was just one of those days”, said Harbold of his round. “If you look at the score card my round was a little up and down on the front nine but I was able to make some putts so I never really got down on myself. On the back nine, I hit some really good wedges and gave myself a lot of chances which I was able to capitalize.”

As play continued at Whitford Country Club the closest anyone got to Harbold’s score was a trio of 1-under (71s). The first to get to that number was Brendon Post (Univ. of Delaware) who reached the number after carding six birdies and five bogeys. Next to join the group at 1-under was Rob Shuey (Colonial Golf Club). Unfortunately for Shuey it was a late bogey that dropped him back to 1-under. The final player to shoot 1-under at Whitford was Mark Sheftic (Merion Golf Club). Sheftic, like Shuey, was thwarted by a late bogey.

Leading the way at Concord Country Club was Bob Hennefer (Indian Springs Golf Course). As he made his way around the outward nine, Hennefer traded one birdie and one bogey and found himself at even par through his first nine holes. However as he started his inward nine, Hennefer carded two quick birdies on holes 10 & 11. After Hennefer dropped a shot on the par-3 15th hole he came to the 18th hole at 1-under. After two great shots, Hennefer had a chance to post the second eagle of the day at eighteen. When his putt found the bottom of the cup Hennefer finished with a 3-under (68) and jumped into second place after round one.

Finishing one shot behind Hennefer and two shots behind first round leader Harbold were a pair of players who carded scores of 2-under (69). Reaching the 2-under number first was Hugo Mazzalupi (Patriots Glen National Golf Club) who birdied his first hole and his final two holes to reach the number. The next player to finish at 2-under was Brett Melton (Radley Run Country Club). Melton posted two birdies and one bogey on each of his nines to end the day at 2-under.

“I am not going to put a number on tomorrow’s round”, said Harbold. “I will keep with my routine and just see what happens.”

Players will now switch courses for the Championship’s second round. At the end of round two, the field will be cut to the low 60 players and ties who will return to Concord Country Club on Friday for the third and final round.

Dave McNabb of Applebrook Golf Club Wins 2018 Philadelphia Senior PGA Professional Championship

Dave McNabb of Applebrook Golf Club Wins 2018 Philadelphia Senior PGA Professional Championship; Will Lead Group of Seven to 30th Senior PGA Professional Championship

Philadelphia PGA Senior Championship Leaderboard

Malvern, Pa. – The 2018 edition of the Philadelphia Senior PGA Professional Championship was played August 20-21, 2018 at White Manor Country Club in Malvern, Pa. Nearly 40 Philadelphia Senior PGA Professionals gathered to compete for one of seven spots in the 30th Senior PGA Professional Championship at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla October 25-28, 2018.

As play got underway on day two of the Championship, Dave McNabb (Applebrook Golf Club) found himself one shot back of overnight leader Dave Quinn (Philmont Country Club) who had posted an opening round 4-under (67). Playing in the tournament’s final pairing, McNabb was able to keep an eye on his Quinn as they made their way around the course.

Despite a bogey on his opening hole, McNabb was able to recover nicely and carded three birdies on his front nine to make the turn at 2-under for the day. Meanwhile Quinn managed only two birdies and an untimely bogey on the ninth hole meant that the two competitors were tied as they began the final nine holes of the Championship.

As McNabb and Quinn played their way back to the clubhouse Quinn was unable to get anything going and a pair of bogeys would ultimately drop him from the top spot. However, McNabb posted three additional birdies which helped him to overcome a bogey and a potentially devastating double bogey on the 18th hole to finish his second round at 2-under (69) giving him a 36-hole total of 5-under (137) and a two shot victory. Quinn finished the Championship with a two-day total of 3-under (139) giving him a share of second place with George Forster (Radnor Valley Country Club) who moved into contention after posting a second day low round of 3-under (68).

Including his win at the 94th Philadelphia PGA Professional Championship (2015), McNabb now joins a short list of Philadelphia PGA Professionals who have won both the Philadelphia PGA Professional Championship and the Philadelphia Senior PGA Professional Championship.

“It feels incredible to get this win today,” said McNabb of Senior Championship win. “I had been working really hard to get my game in shape for this event. I was disappointed when I didn’t qualifying for this year’s PGA Championship but I used that time practicing. I am looking forward to competing alongside my fellow Philadelphia PGA Professionals at this year’s 30th Senior PGA Professional Championship.”

McNabb will lead a group of seven Philadelphia Senior PGA Professionals to this year’s National Senior PGA Professional Championship. Joining McNabb in Florida will be Quinn, George Forster (Radnor Valley Country Club), John Pillar (Country Club of Woodloch Springs), Brian Kelly (Bucknell Golf Club), John Allen (Huntingdon Valley Country Club), and John Appleget (The Shore Club).

Hertzog Comes from Behind to Capture the 96th Philadelphia PGA Professional Championship

Tony Leodora Interviews 96th PPGA Champion Terry Hertzog

http://philadelphia.pga.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/Phila.-PGA-Champ.mp3

Mount Laurel, N.J. – September 21, 2016 – Terry Hertzog (Country Club of York), is the winner of the 96th Philadelphia PGA Professional Championship, at Laurel Creek Country Club. Hertzog will lead 13 Philadelphia PGA Professionals to compete in the 51st PGA Professional Championship, next June 17-20, 2018 at Bayonet Black Horse in Seaside, California.

Hertzog’s charge to the top of the leaderboard was slow and steady but in the end it proved to be the method best suited for him. Hertzog found red numbers on holes 5, 10 and 11 and after 36-hole leader Perla was unable to capture the magic from day two Hertzog quickly found himself in the mix for the Championship.

Other names tried to play their way into the top spot including a pair of past champions, Jordan Gibbs and Dave Quinn. Gibbs got to 2-under after 15 holes but a pair of bogeys on holes 16-17 dropped him from contention for a second consecutive title. Quinn also found himself at 2-under after 15 holes but similar to Gibbs, a bogey on the difficult 16th hole proved too much to overcome.

Although Hertzog trailed the leader by seven shots heading into the final round consistent play throughout the week, especially in today’s round ultimately vaulted him to the top of the leaderboard with a championship total of 2-under (210). Dave Quinn (Philmont Country Club) was the Championship’s runner-up, after carding a three day total of 1-under-par 211. They are joined by Jordan Gibbs (Gulph Mills Golf Club), Stu Ingraham (M Golf Range), Rich Steinmetz (Spring Ford Country Club), Tony Perla (LedgeRock Golf Club), Billy Stewart (The ACE Club), Brett Melton (Radley Run Country Club), Brendon Post (Univ. of Delaware), Alex Knoll (Riverton, N.J.), Mark Sheftic (Merion Golf Club), Rusty Harbold (Philadelphia Cricket Club), and Dave McNabb (Applebrook Golf Club).

The win was Hertzog’s third Philadelphia PGA Professional title becoming the tenth Philadelphia PGA Professional to accomplish the feat. George Smith (1929-30, 1932), Charles Schneider (1933, 1937, 1939), Henry Williams, Jr. (1949, 1953, 1958), Stan Dudas (1955, 1959, 1968), Art Wall, Jr. (1956, 1962-63, 1965, 1971), Dick Smith, Sr. (1974, 1977, 1981-83), Rick Osberg (1985, 1989, 1992), Brian Kelly (1995, 2000, 2005), and Rich Steinmetz (2007, 2010-11).

“It feels really amazing to get this win today”, commented Hertzog on his Championship. “I honestly didn’t think I had a chance heading into today but I wanted to put together a good round to qualify for the PGA Professional Championship next June. I played really well early in the day and that helped offset some blemishes late in the day. It’s a great feeling and I’m so thankful to the staff and membership at Laurel Creek for allowing us to use their facility the last few days.”

LedgeRock’s Perla Surges Into the Lead at the 96th Philadelphia PGA Professional Championship

Mount Laurel, N.J. – In stark contrast to what players had to battle in their opening rounds, the weather conditions for the second round of the 96th Philadelphia PGA Professional Championship were near perfect giving all in the field the chance to post a low number.

One player taking full advantage of the relatively benign conditions was Tony Perla (LedgeRock Golf Club). After an opening round 1-under-par Perla was looking to make a move and put himself in a good position heading into the Championship’s final round. Perla not only put himself into prime position he catapulted himself into the lead after a tournament best 7-under par (64). Perla played a flawless round of golf at Laurel Creek while adding an eagle and five birdies along the way to grab the 36-hole lead. Perla’s two-day total of 8-under (69-64-133) is five shots clear of the field.

Sitting in second place is defending champion Jordan Gibbs (Gulph Mills Golf Club). Gibbs carded an even par (71) is his opening round at Laurel Creek and as his championship shifted to Burlington Country Club for the second round he needed to make move. Gibbs got off to a fast start with birdies on his first three holes. Gibbs would go on to add one additional birdie but coupled with a lone bogey Gibbs would finish his second round at 3-under (67) giving him a 36-hole total of 3-under (71-67-138).

Although overnight leader Brendon Post (Univ of Delaware) could not find the same success that vaulted him to the top of the leaderboard after round one he did play well enough to maintain a spot within the top three. Post had a relatively uneventful round with one birdie and one bogey but a hiccup on the tough par-5 14th hole dropped Post into a third place tied with past champion Terry Hertzog (CC of York). Hertzog posted an impressive 3-under (68) in his second round today at Laurel Creek to put him in red figures at 1-under (72-68-140) after 36-holes.

Rounding out the top five at the end of day two a pair of champions sit within striking distance at even par (141). Dave McNabb (Applebrook Golf Club) got to even par with scores of (73-68-141) while Dave Quinn (Philmont Country Club) got there with a (71-70-141).

In addition to competing for the championship’s top prize and the William B. Packer trophy, players are also competing for a spot in next summer’s 51st PGA Professional Championship which is being held at the Bayonet Black Horse in Sunriver, California. There are several players within striking distance of the leaders but there are also more than 15 players within three shots of a qualifying spot.

The final round of the 96th Philadelphia PGA Professional Championship will get underway at 8:00 AM at Laurel Creek Country Club with the tournament leaders teeing off at 12:30 PM.

Post & Cooper Set the Pace at the 96th Philadelphia PGA Professional Championship

Mount Laurel, N.J. – The opening round of the 96th Philadelphia PGA Professional Championship was held on Tuesday, September 19 at both Laurel Creek Country Club and Burlington Country Club. The field of 139 PGA Professionals was split between the two facilities for the Championship’s first day.

Playing in the tournament’s first pairing, Brendon Post (Univ of Delaware), playing his opening round at Laurel Creek Country Club, set the pace early. Post carded three birdies on his opening nine holes to make the turn at 3-under. As Post made his way back to the clubhouse he carded two birdies along with two bogeys to finish his inward nine at even par giving him a day one total of 3-under (68).

It was not until four hours later that anyone would join Post at the top of the leaderboard. John Cooper (Green Valley Country Club), also playing at Laurel Creek Country Club got off to a quick start with a birdie on the first hole. Cooper would add an additional birdie on the par-5 5th hole but after a double bogey on the tricky par-4 8th, his only blemish of the day, Cooper would make the turn at even par. After a couple of pars early in his back nine, Cooper would card three consecutive birdies on holes 12-14 to get to 3-under which is where he would finish his opening round.

While Post and Cooper were the low scores of the day, there are a number of players within striking distance heading into the Championship’s second round. Playing at Laurel Creek Country Club, Rusty Harbold (Philadelphia Cricket Club) managed one more birdie than bogey to post an opening round 1-under (70). A pair of even pars from Sam Ambrose (Aronimink Golf Club) and defending champion Jordan Gibbs (Gulph Mills Golf Club) leave them three shots back after round one.

The low round of the day at the Championship’s second course, Burlington Country Club, went to Tony Perla (LedgeRock Golf Club). Perla traded two birdies against two bogeys to make the turn at even par. After consecutive birdies on holes 10-11 Perla would drop a shot at the difficult par-3 12th hole dropping him to 1-under which is where he would finish.

The 54-hole Championship features a 36-hole cut and is the marquee event for all Philadelphia PGA Professionals. The top finisher will take home the William B. Packer Trophy along with the first place check and will lead 12 Philadelphia PGA Professionals to next summer’s 51st PGA Professional Championship at Bayonet Black Horse in Seaside, California. Players will now flip courses before playing their second rounds.

Dave Quinn Captures Philadelphia Senior PGA Professional Title; Earns Berth in 29th Senior PGA Professional Championship

VILLANOVA, Pa. August 22, 2017 – Dave Quinn of (Marlton, N.J.), winner of the Philadelphia Senior PGA Professional Championship August 21-22, 2017 at Radnor Valley Country Club will lead eight Philadelphia PGA Professionals to compete Sept. 28 – Oct. 1, in the 29th Senior PGA Professional Championship.

The national Championship, presented by Mercedes-Benz USA and supported by Golf Advisor and John Deere, will be held at Desert Mountain’s Cochise and Geronimo Courses in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Quinn turned in a winning total of 5-under-par 135 to capture the Philadelphia Senior PGA Professional Championship supported by Golf Advisor and Mercedes-Benz USA. Dave McNabb of (Newark, Del.) finished one strokes back at 4-under-par 136. They are joined by George Forster (Blue Bell, Pa.), John Pillar (Hawley, Pa.), Greg Farrow (Marlton, N.J.), Stu Ingraham (Broomall, Pa.), Wayne Phillips (Allentown, Pa.), and John DiMarco (Cherry Hill, N.J.)

The Senior PGA Professional Championship brings together a field of 264 contestants representing the PGA of America’s 41 nationwide Sections, and features a total purse of $300,000. The first two rounds will be conducted on the Cochise and Geronimo Courses. The first cut will be made after 36 holes of play to the low 90 players plus ties.  The second cut will be made after 54 holes of play to the low 70 players plus ties.  The final two rounds will be played on the Conchise course.

The Cochise and Geronimo Courses, each Jack Nicklaus designs, present a wide-ranging test of skill. The Cochise Course’s par-72 layout can be extended to 7,042 yards with the Sonoran desert touching on every side. From 2012-2016, the course was host to the PGA Tour Champions season-ending Charles Schwab Championship, and it is a former site of The Tradition, one of five major championships on the PGA Tour Champions. The Cochise Course features four premier “risk-reward” par-5 holes, along with rolling fairways surrounded by water and dramatic rock outcroppings.

The Geronimo Course is perhaps the most visually intimidating of six courses at Desert Mountain, and chosen one of the Most Challenging Golf Courses in Arizona by the Phoenix Business Journal. The par-72, 7,293-yard layout winds its way through dramatic boulders, deep washes, ravines and lush desert and over stunning plateaus.

Begun in 1989, the Senior PGA Professional Championship is modeled after the PGA Professional Championship, with a field of 50-and-older senior PGA Professionals who advanced through 41 Section Championships conducted from June through August this year.

The top 35 finishers in the national Championship earn a berth in the 79th KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship, which will be conducted in May 2018, at Harbor Shores in Benton Harbor, Michigan.

The top five finishers earn an exemption into the final stage of the 2018 PGA Tour Champions National Finals. Since its debut, many participants in the Senior PGA Professional Championship have used their success in the event as a springboard to a PGA Tour Champions career.

Gibbs Holds 36-Hole Lead; Pagett Shoots Tournament Best Round

Flourtown, Pa. – The second round of the 95th Philadelphia PGA Professional Championship was played under near perfect conditions on Wednesday, September 21 with players swapping courses at Philadelphia Cricket Club. With one round under their belts the more than 160 players in the field had a better idea of what they needed to do to find their way inside the cut line of the low 60 players and ties.

Jordan Gibbs (Gulph Mills Golf Club) wasted no time finding his way to the top of the leaderboard during round two. He made two birdies on his first three holes on the Wissahickon Course to reach 7-under par. He would add a trio of birdies and bogeys to follow and finish with a 2-under (68), and remain at the 7-under mark. Overnight leader Scott Reilly (Philadelphia Country Club) finds himself still in contention after a 1-over (71). After reaching 7-under early in his round, he dropped three shots over his last six holes to fall into a tie for third. His strong start to the day was still enough to land him a place in the final pairing.

Last year’s champion, Dave McNabb (Applebrook Golf Club), shot 2-under (70) on the Militia Hill Course and sits just one back at 6-under (136) in his quest to defend his title. After winning the Philadelphia Senior PGA Championship, Stu Ingraham (M Golf Range) has a chance to put his name on the side of both trophies in 2016. He carded a 2-under (70) on the Militia Hill Course playing alongside McNabb to get to 5-under (137).

Dave Pagett (Whitemarsh Valley Country Club) fired the round of the day and of the championship, carding a 6-under (64) on the Wissahickon Course, the lowest competitive score for the tee setup since the course was reconfigured. Pagett climbed up the leaderboard as he made five consecutive birdies on his back nine, beginning on the eleventh hole. The shot of the day, though, went to Curtis Kirkpatrick (Indian Spring Country Club). Playing the Militia Hill Course, he knocked three-wood into the hole for a double eagle on the par-5 sixth hole.

In addition to competing for the championship’s top prize, the William B. Packer trophy, all players are also competing for a spot in next summer’s 50th PGA Professional National Championship which is being held at the Sunriver Resort in Oregon. There are several players within striking distance of the leaders but there are also more than 20 players within three shots of a qualifying spot so tomorrow’s final round is shaping up for an exciting finish.

Wednesday’s final round is set to get underway at Philadelphia Cricket Club – Wissahickon Course with tee times beginning at 8:00 AM. The tournament leaders will tee off at 12:24 PM. For complete 95th Philadelphia PGA Professional Championship coverage visit www.philadelphia.pga.com.

Reilly Holds First Round Lead at 95th Philadelphia PGA Professional Championship

Flourtown, Pa. – The opening round of the 95th Philadelphia PGA Professional Championship was held at historic Philadelphia Cricket Club. The field of more than 170 Philadelphia PGA Professionals was split between the Cricket Club’s Wissahickon and Militia Hill courses.

The 54-hole Championship features a 36-hole cut and is the marquee event for all Philadelphia PGA Professionals. The top finisher will take home the William B. Packer Trophy along with the first place check and will lead 12 Philadelphia PGA Professionals to next summer’s 50th PGA Professional Championship at Sunriver Resort in Oregon.

After the rains that came through the area during the day Monday, players competed under warm and muggy conditions for today’s opening round. Playing in the tournament’s first pairing, Dave McNabb (Applebrook GC) posted the number early in the day for everyone to chase. Playing on the Wissahickon course, McNabb carded three birdies and an eagle against only one bogey en route to a 4-under (66), the day’s low round on the Wissahickon course.

However at the end of the day a pair of players competing on the Militia Hill course were able to go low and put themselves just ahead of McNabb on the leaderboard. The first to do so was Jordan Gibbs (Gulph Mills Golf Club). Gibbs carded six birdies and a bogey to post a 5-under (67) on the par-72 golf course. Gibbs briefly held the lead but unfortunately for him Scott Reilly (Philadelphia Country Club) was able to best him by a shot.

Playing the day’s final pairing Reilly finished his round with a clean score card, one of only two players to play bogey free (Ryan Lagergren). Reilly carded three birdies on each nine to finish the day at 6-under (66) and the outright lead after round one.

Players will now switch courses for the second round before a 36-hole cut brings the field to the top 60 players plus ties. The third and final round will be played on the Wissahickon course at the Philadelphia Cricket Club on Thursday, September 22.
