Gibbs Holds 36-Hole Lead; Pagett Shoots Tournament Best Round
Flourtown, Pa. – The second round of the 95th Philadelphia PGA Professional Championship was played under near perfect conditions on Wednesday, September 21 with players swapping courses at Philadelphia Cricket Club. With one round under their belts the more than 160 players in the field had a better idea of what they needed to do to find their way inside the cut line of the low 60 players and ties.
Jordan Gibbs (Gulph Mills Golf Club) wasted no time finding his way to the top of the leaderboard during round two. He made two birdies on his first three holes on the Wissahickon Course to reach 7-under par. He would add a trio of birdies and bogeys to follow and finish with a 2-under (68), and remain at the 7-under mark. Overnight leader Scott Reilly (Philadelphia Country Club) finds himself still in contention after a 1-over (71). After reaching 7-under early in his round, he dropped three shots over his last six holes to fall into a tie for third. His strong start to the day was still enough to land him a place in the final pairing.
Last year’s champion, Dave McNabb (Applebrook Golf Club), shot 2-under (70) on the Militia Hill Course and sits just one back at 6-under (136) in his quest to defend his title. After winning the Philadelphia Senior PGA Championship, Stu Ingraham (M Golf Range) has a chance to put his name on the side of both trophies in 2016. He carded a 2-under (70) on the Militia Hill Course playing alongside McNabb to get to 5-under (137).
Dave Pagett (Whitemarsh Valley Country Club) fired the round of the day and of the championship, carding a 6-under (64) on the Wissahickon Course, the lowest competitive score for the tee setup since the course was reconfigured. Pagett climbed up the leaderboard as he made five consecutive birdies on his back nine, beginning on the eleventh hole. The shot of the day, though, went to Curtis Kirkpatrick (Indian Spring Country Club). Playing the Militia Hill Course, he knocked three-wood into the hole for a double eagle on the par-5 sixth hole.
In addition to competing for the championship’s top prize, the William B. Packer trophy, all players are also competing for a spot in next summer’s 50th PGA Professional National Championship which is being held at the Sunriver Resort in Oregon. There are several players within striking distance of the leaders but there are also more than 20 players within three shots of a qualifying spot so tomorrow’s final round is shaping up for an exciting finish.
Wednesday’s final round is set to get underway at Philadelphia Cricket Club – Wissahickon Course with tee times beginning at 8:00 AM. The tournament leaders will tee off at 12:24 PM. For complete 95th Philadelphia PGA Professional Championship coverage visit www.philadelphia.pga.com.
