Cooper, Cornish Tie Pillar, Bergstol in 2022 Philadelphia PGA Henry McQuiston Senior Pro-Junior Pro Championship

Philadelphia, Pa. (September 29, 2022) — PGA Members John Cooper of Green Valley Country Club in Lafayette Hill, Pa., and Andrew Cornish of Cedarbrook Country Club in Blue Bell, Pa., teamed together to tie their peers, John Pillar of the C.C. at Woodloch Springs in Hawley, Pa., and Brian Bergstol of Shawnee Inn & Golf Resort in Shawnee on Delaware, Pa., in the 2022 Philadelphia PGA Henry McQuiston Senior Pro-Junior Pro Championship at Bala Golf Club. This is the third consecutive year Pillar and Bergstol have finished atop the leaderboard in this event.

Both teams finished their Four Ball rounds with scores of 58, 10-under-par, topping John Allen, Sheftic Performance Center, and Trevor Bensel, Sandy Run C.C., by one stroke. Pillar and Bergstol’s round was one stroke better than their winning score last year, and one higher than their winning total in 2020.

Three teams rounded out the top five, four strokes behind the winners: Mike Molino, C.C. of Scranton, and Dustin McCormick, Glen Brook G.C.; Yardley C.C.’s Rick Hughart and J.T. Wambold; and Burlington C.C.’s Mike Mack and Alex Willey.

Charles Genter, PGA, Inducted into Philadelphia PGA Hall of Fame

Lower Gwynedd Township, Pa. (September 28, 2022) — The Philadelphia PGA Section and its Hall of Fame Committee has inducted PGA Member Charles Genter into its Hall of Fame as the class of 2022. He is the 46th member of the Philadelphia PGA Hall of Fame.

Genter, born in Daytona Beach, Fla., in 1940, was elected to PGA Membership in 1966, and worked as the PGA head professional at Tavistock (N.J.) Country Club for nearly 30 years before retiring in 2000. Working at one facility for decades is generally a rarity in the golf industry in the present-day.

“This honor belongs to my family,” Genter humbly said after receiving the news of his induction.

Prior to earning his PGA Membership, Genter worked as an assistant professional at various clubs in Florida, Michigan, and New Jersey, before serving in the U.S. Army for two years. While in the Army, he managed the Cole Park Golf Club on the Fort Campbell military installation on the Kentucky-Tennessee state border. Following his service, Genter worked in Indianapolis, and in New Jersey, before accepting his position at Tavistock. Two of his students went on to have successful playing careers, including Betsy Haag Manderino and Leslie Smith, winning 15 total club championships, five South Jersey Ladies Amateurs, and two Philadelphia Ladies Amateurs. In his own right, Genter qualified for the 1969 U.S. Open at Champions Golf Club in Houston, Texas. Genter went on to earn his PGA Master Professional status, becoming the Section’s third PGA Master Professional in 1990.

Throughout his career, Genter served the Philadelphia PGA Section, and the PGA of America, in various capacities, including in senior leadership positions: Section president, 1990-92; Section Secretary, 1989; Section secretary, 1985-88; and Section District Director. In addition to his role as a Section officer, Genter served on the PGA’s national Membership Committee, taught PGA education in their then Business Schools I and II, and was a member of the PGA’s Membership Task Force, and the PGA of America Presidents Society. He was also a member of the Section’s Nominating and Long-Range committees, and served as the Long-Range Committee chair.

Furthermore, Genter was enlisted by Tavistock members to design a nine-hole executive golf course in Cape Hatteras, N.C., named Ocean Acres.

Outside of his official PGA duties, Genter was a merit badge counselor for the Boy Scouts’ Troop 65, worked with blind golfers and students with Down Syndrome on their games, and worked to improve and promote the International Four-Ball Tournament, and West Jersey Hospital Foundation Tournament.

“We take great pride in welcoming Mr. Genter to our Hall of Fame,” said Philadelphia PGA Section Executive Director Geoffrey Surrette, PGA. “Our Section would not be as successful, or well respected, without his leadership and dedication to the game and fellow PGA Professionals.”

Amateur Andrew Keeling Wins Inaugural Silvercrest Cup in Sudden-Death Playoff

King of Prussia, Pa. (September 26, 2022) — Amateur Andrew Keeling of Kennett Square (Pa.) Golf Club birdied the first sudden-death playoff hole to win the inaugural Silvercrest Cup at Gulph Mills Golf Club, while runner-up Brian Bergstol, PGA, of Shawnee Inn & Golf Resort in Shawnee on Delaware, Pa., took home the $15,000 low PGA Professionals’ winners check.

The Philadelphia PGA Section, one of the PGA of America’s 41 geographical managing entities, and Silvercrest Asset Management Group, an investment advisor providing asset management and family office services to high net worth individuals and select institutional investors, partnered to create the Silvercrest Cup, a new tournament series for Philadelphia PGA Professionals in 2022. Fifty-four PGA Professionals earned their place in the $30,000 Silvercrest Cup final via a points system drawn from their performance in four qualifying events; the top eight amateurs on the Golf Association of Philadelphia’s (GAP) William Hyndman III Player of the Year list were also invited to compete. Bergstol’s $15,000 in earnings is one of the most lucrative winner’s checks on the Section’s tournament calendar. In addition to the final purse, each of the four qualifying events included a bonus pool of $5,000, shared between each qualifier’s champion and runner-up.

Keeling’s march to victory at times seemed to be a roller coaster ride, as his round included an impressive seven birdies, one eagle, two bogies, and two double bogies, to finish with a 3-under-par 68 to tie Bergstol, who was the leader in the clubhouse.

“It was an up-and-down round today,” Keeling said following the playoff. “It was my first time playing Gulph Mills, but I was fortunate to make several birdies to stay in contention.”

In the playoff, Keeling two-putted from approximately 25 feet behind the hole on the par-5, 18th hole, to make birdie and clinch victory, after Bergstol tapped in for a par. In addition to his home facility, Kennett Square G. & C.C., keeping the perpetual Silvercrest Cup for the year, Keeling also received the winner’s and low amateur medals.

Bergstol, the reigning Philadelphia PGA Professional Champion, had a more conventional round, carding four birdies and one bogey. While he said he was disappointed to not walk away with the trophy, he really appreciated the winner’s check and Silvercrest’s support.

While the Silvercrest Cup rewards playing excellence of Philadelphia PGA Professionals and top amateurs, the series also provided significant donations of $10,000 to the Philadelphia PGA Section’s 501(c)(3) charitable foundation, PGA REACH Philadelphia, and the GAP’s J.Wood Platt Caddie Scholarship Trust.

Three PGA Members rounded out the top five at 2-under-par: Eric Kennedy, Overbrook G.C.; Rich Steinmetz, Spring Ford C.C.; and Zac Oakley, Bidermann G.C.

Kennedy and Steinmetz tied for top honors in the Senior Division at 2-under-par, followed by John Pillar, C.C. at Woodloch Springs; Terry Hertzog; and John Cooper, Green Valley C.C.; at 2-over-par.

Good golf scores were not restricted to the top of the leaderboard, as Lookaway G.C.’s Mark Sheftic, PGA, made a hole-in-one on Gulph Mills’ fourth hole; he used a 54-degree wedge from 120 yards. Well done, Mark!

The 2022 Silvercrest Cup is presented by Silvercrest Asset Management. The Philadelphia PGA Section and its PGA Professionals thank our host, Gulph Mills Golf Club, its members, management, host PGA Professionals, and staff, as well as our partners, as the event would not have been possible without their support.

Hertzog, Drescher Team to Win 2022 A.B. Thorn Memorial Pro-Am

Lancaster, Pa. (September 22, 2022) — PGA Member Terry Hertzog, and his amateur partner Zak Drescher, teamed to win the 2022 A.B. Thorn Memorial Pro-Am at Lancaster Country Club in difficult conditions.

The annual tournament was first played in 1936 under the moniker “Lancaster Pro-Am,” and has since changed to its current name to memorialize A.B. Thorn, Lancaster’s former PGA Head Professional, who also held the Section’s first vice president position in 1942-1944.

Hertzog and Drescher’s Four Ball score, 4-under-par 66, was impressive, as the field had to battle off-and-on rain, and consistently strong winds, with gusts around 25 miles per hour. Both Hertzog and Drescher were responsible for two birdies each (Nos. 13 and 18, and Nos. 7 and 8, respectively), and zero bogies.

Three teams tied for second place at 3-under-par: Hugo Mazzalupi, PGA, Linfield National G.C., and Scott Storck; John Spina, PGA, Philadelphia Cricket Club, and Kevin Kelly; and Tom Michaels, PGA, Berkshire C.C., and Nathan Sutherland. Lancaster C.C.’s Matt Goudie, PGA, and Marc Oliveri; tied for fifth place at 2-under-par with C.C. of York’s Parks Price, PGA, and Rij Patel.

The 2022 A.B. Thorn Memorial Pro-Am is supported by Holderness & Bourne, and Ohana Farm LLC. The Philadelphia PGA Section and its PGA Professionals thank our host, Lancaster Country Club, its members, management, host PGA Professionals, and staff, as well as our partners, as the event would not have been possible without their support.

Braden Shattuck, PGA, Wins 2022 Jack Jolly & Son Championship

Fleetwood, Pa. (September 19, 2022) — PGA Member Braden Shattuck of Rolling Green Golf Club in Springfield, Pa., turned in a 4-under-par 66 to win the 2022 Jack Jolly & Son Championship at Moselem Springs Golf Club by one stroke over Cedarbrook Country Club’s Andrew Cornish. The tournament is a Philadelphia PGA Rolex / The Haverford Trust Company Player of the Year event.

Shattuck was fortunate to complete his entire 18-hole round before severe weather suspended play for one hour and 41 minutes. He made only two bogies, coupled with six birdies, including on his final three holes. Cornish needed to wait through the weather delay to finish his bogey-free round, ultimately finished behind Shattuck.

“I played very steadily for my first five holes,” Shattuck said after his round. “I made a great par save on No, 6 to keep it going, and made it through hole Nos. 13-15 in 1-over; they played very difficult today.

“It was nice to play well today,” Shattuck continued. “I haven’t played recently, as I injured my back right after the [Philadelphia PGA Professional Championship] and had to withdraw from Q School, but it felt fine today.”

Shattuck went on to thank the membership and staff at Rolling Green, including PGA Head Professional Scott Chisholm, Titleist, Makefield Putters, and our host, Moselem Springs Golf Club, and their membership and ownership.

Michael Young, Brookside C.C., made a run on his final nine, only to finish in third place at 2-under-par following a bogey on No. 18. Zac Oakley, Bidermann G.C.; Nick Iacono, Chester Valley G.C.; and Joanna Coe, Merion G.C.; each tied for fourth place at even par.

In the Senior Division, Applebrook G.C.’s Dave McNabb finished at 1-over-par to finish one stroke ahead of John Allen, Sheftic Performance Center. Five PGA Professionals rounded out the top five at 3-over: John Cooper, Green Valley C.C.; Eddie Perrino, C.C. of York; Rich Steinmetz, Spring Ford C.C.; George Forster, Radnor Valley C.C. and Terry Hertzog.

Bill Sautter, Philadelphia Cricket Club, finished atop the Super Senior Division, bettering Forster by three strokes, followed by Brian Kelly, Jeb Boyle, and Leigh C.C.’s Rick Flesher, who finished seven back.

The Philadelphia Assistants’ Organization (PAO) also hosted a concurrent event, with Andrew Cornish topping the field at 3-under-par, one stroke better than Michael Young. Zac Oakley finished three behind the winners; Kyle Early, Waynesborough C.C.; ended his day at 1-over, while Brian Bergstol, Shawnee Inn & Golf Resort; and Rob Wolfers, tied for fifth place.

The 2022 Jack Jolly & Son Championship is presented by Jack Jolly & Son Inc., and supported by Jani-King, Southern TideOhana Farm LLC, and the PGA Tour. The Philadelphia PGA Section and its PGA Professionals thank our host, Moselem Springs Golf Club, its members, management, host PGA Professionals, and staff, as well as our partners, as the event would not have been possible without their support.

Trevor Bensel, PGA, Captures 2022 National Car Rental Philadelphia Assistant PGA Professional Championship

Bernville, Pa. (September 12, 2022) — Trevor Bensel, PGA, of Sandy Run Golf Club in Oreland, Pennsylvania, winner of the 2022 National Car Rental Philadelphia Assistant PGA Professional Championship at Heidelberg Country Club, will lead five fellow Section PGA Professionals to compete in the 2022 National Car Rental Assistant PGA Professional Championship, November 17-20, at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida. This is Bensel’s second victory at this championship, having previously won at Chester Valley G.C. in 2019.

Bensel led recently-crowned Philadelphia PGA Professional Champion and 2017 Section Assistant Champion Brian Bergstol, Shawnee Inn & Golf Resort in Shawnee on Delaware, Pa.; and Zac Oakley, Bidermann G.C. in Wilmington, Del.; by two strokes after his 3-under-par opening round of 67.

Play was suspended at 4:32 p.m. ET due to severe weather, and the Section’s Tournament Committee ultimately cancelled the final round and shortened the championship to 18 holes, as storms threatened as darkness approached.

Our 2022 champion started with a double bogey on his first hole of the day, followed by a bogey on No. 5, but finished strongly with birdies on Nos. 8 and 9, and four more in the last five holes, including three in a row on Nos. 14-16.

“My first tee shot went [out of bounds], which was not the best way to start,” Bensel said of his round. “I figured I had plenty of holes left to get it done. I tried to keep the ball in front of me and made a few good putts coming down the stretch.

“It was fun to play with Brian and Zac,” he continued. “They are good friends of mine, and we feed off each other when we’re all playing well.”

Bensel went on to thank the Sandy Run membership for their constant support, Titleist, FootJoy, Holderness & Bourne, and Makefield Putters.

In addition to having his name engraved on the perpetual George Izett Memorial Trophy, and the winner’s check, Bensel will be joined at the 2022 National Car Rental Assistant PGA Professional Championship in Florida, by Bergstol, Oakley, Alex Knoll, Glen Brook G.C. in Strousburg, Pa.; Andrew Turner, Berkshire C.C. in Reading, Pa.; and Jeff Fick, Moselem Springs G.C. in Fleetwood, Pa.; Turner and Fick earned their spots via a sudden death playoff after the severe weather moved through the area. Bergstol had previously secured his spot at PGA G.C. via his second place finish in the 2021 National Car Rental Assistant PGA Professional Championship.

Steve Sanderson, Pine Valley (N.J.) G.C.; and Jacob Woodman, Aronimink G.C. in Newtown Square, Pa.; will be the first and second alternates, followed by Rocco Sgrillo, John F. Byrne G.C. in Philadelphia.
