Steinmetz Returns to Winner’s Circle at Doylestown Open

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – On Friday, July 29 the annual Doylestown Open was played at Doylestown Country Club, which in 2016 is celebrating its centennial. The field was comprised of 75 Philadelphia PGA professionals and 4 amateur golfers. The heavy rains that plagued the area throughout the day Thursday and into the morning Friday cleared out and paved the way for a great tournament.

Playing early in the day Rich Steinmetz set the pace for the rest of the field. Steinmetz made his way around the 6,600 yards long golf course at 5-under-par (67). Steinmetz posted three birdies and a bogey on his opening nine holes. However, as he played the inward nine, Steinmetz played bogey-free adding three additional birdies to post the impressive score.

It would not be until late in the day that anyone would make a run at the top of the leaderboard and Steinmetz. The first player to try and catch Steinmetz was Stu Ingraham (M Golf Range) who carded a 4-under-par (68). Ingraham was in prime position until an untimely bogey on the par3 17th hole dropped him from contention. The next player to try and catch Steinmetz was Greg Matthias (Tavistock Country Club). After carding three birdies, three bogeys, and three pars on the outward nine, Matthias was able to right the ship and post four birdies on the closing holes. However, no player after Matthias was able to reach the top of the leaderboard meaning Steinmetz was crowned champion.

The win was a bit of redemption for Steinmetz who came up just one shot short in 2015 to eventual champion Dave Quinn (Links Golf Club). It also marks a return to the winner’s circle for Steinmetz who last won a Philadelphia PGA in 2014 at The TaylorMade Top 100. Steinmetz is also a repeat Doylestown Open champion having won the event in 2007.

Although he came up just short, Ingraham did manage to walk away with the trophy in the senior division. Ingraham finished three shots ahead of his closest competitor John Allen (Huntingdon Valley Country Club). The win was Ingraham’s fourth senior win of the 2016 season and adds to his lead in the Robert “Skee” Riegel Senior Player of the Year standings.

In the race for the amateur title Rob Bass came out on top. Bass carded a 5-over-par (77) to win the amateur division by one shot. Finishing just behind was Frank Howell and Ryan Rigby who both finished at 6-over-par (78). Howell was the amateur champion in the 2015 Doylestown Open.

The Section would like to thank the membership and staff of Doylestown Country Club and Kevin McClellan, Cutter & Buck and Heritage Creations for their support of this event.

Kraft Wins GALV Lehigh Valley Open on Second Playoff Hole

EASTON, Pa. – After severe thunderstorms abruptly suspended Monday’s opening round, the 2016 edition of the GALV Lehigh Valley Open resumed play on Tuesday, July 26 at Northampton Country Club.

Play got underway at 8:00 am with competitors having anywhere from one putt to eleven holes to complete before the first round could be put in the books. At the conclusion of the first round players were re-paired and sent out as a shotgun at 11:00 am.

Leading the way after the first round was John Appleget (Wildwood Golf & Country Club) who had to return in the morning to finish putting out on the 18th hole. Appleget finished round one with a 5-under-par (67) and a two shot lead.

With the second round of the tournament played as a shotgun it was difficult to gauge where each competitor was in relation to the top of the leaderboard. However, with scores coming in fast and furious at the conclusion of the round two players were able to separate themselves from the field. First round leader Appleget dropped one shot to finish the 36-hole event at 4-under-par (140). Appleget was matched at the top by Kevin Kraft (Bumble Bee Hollow) who carded a pair of 2-under-par (70s) to finish at 4-under-par (140).

With two players tied for the lead a playoff was needed to determine a champion. This was the first time since 2011, when Stu Ingraham (M Golf Range) bested Dave Quinn (Links Golf Club), that a playoff was needed to determine a winner at the GALV Lehigh Valley Open.

On the first playoff hole both Appleget and Kraft found a fairway bunker leaving them a tough 100 yard shot into the 18th hole. After both players found the green with their second shots neither was able to make their birdie putt and had to settle for par meaning a second playoff would be needed.

With a gallery full of Northampton Country Club members and fellow PGA Professionals both Appleget and Kraft headed back to the 18th tee to begin the second sudden death playoff hole. Unlike the first time around both players found the fairway and were able to hit their approach shots on the green.

With about a 30 foot putt for birdie, Kraft was the first player to play. After finding trouble earlier in the tournament, Kraft managed to sink the long putt forcing Appleget to make birdie as well. Unfortunately for Appleget it wasn’t in the cards as his birdie lipped out of the hole giving Kraft the win.

“I did fight my golf swing today but was able to make it work when I needed during the round,” said GALV Lehigh Valley Open Champion Kraft. “I attribute that to the confidence I have built up in my game over the last month. Hopefully I can continue to play well as I have a lot of big events coming up.”

The win was Kraft’s first as a Philadelphia PGA professional with his previous best finish coming at the Delaware Valley Open when he finished tied for 6th.

In the amateur division Evan Notaro carded a second round 2-under-par (70), matching the low round of any amateur during the tournament, to finish with a 36-hole total of 3-under-par (141). Notaro finished four shots ahead of second place finisher Robin McCool.

The Section would like to thank our title sponsor, the Golf Association of Lehigh Valley and Mr. Karl Gilbert as well as the entire staff and membership of Northampton Country Club for their hospitality.

The Philadelphia PGA will continue tournament play this Friday, July 29 at Doylestown Country Club for the annual Doylestown Open. For complete coverage of the Philadelphia PGA be sure to follow us online Facebook, Twitter, Instagram.

Three Teams Tie For Win In Pro-Jr Championship

Royersford, PA. – The Philadelphia PGA held the annual Pro-Junior Championship on Thursday, July 21 at Spring Ford Country Club in Royersford, PA. The Championship pairs one PGA Professional with one amateur, male or female, 18 years of age or younger. In addition to being a competitive event that allows the junior golfer to experience a true Philadelphia PGA Professional tournament, the Championship is also about camaraderie between PGA Professionals and the junior participants.

The Championship, which was changed last year to four ball or better ball of partner’s Net event (with amateurs getting 80% of their handicap), also added a Gross division with teams only allowed to earn prizes in one division.

In the Net division the teams featuring PGA Professional Stu Ingraham (M Golf Range)) and his amateur partner Mike Sydnes, Andrew Turner (Whitford CC) and his partner Nicky Marrollo and Orist Wells (Piman GC) and partner Shea Wolfle finished tied for the top spot all shooting 8-under par 64. Mike Paukovits (St Davis GC) and partner Conor Rinehart finished in fourth one shot behind the winners at 7-under 65.

Although the three teams that were tied for first in the Net division also finished on top in the Gross division, the team taking the honors was PGA Professional Bill Kindoll (Bent Creek CC) and amateur partner Jack Marchant who finished with a 5-under 67. They were tied by Paukovits and Rinehart but they had already won a prize in the net division.

The Section would like to thank SKIMP, the sponsor for the day, and Spring Ford CC for hosting the event.

Tournament’s Last Group Claims First Spot at NCR Pro-Scratch Championship

Malvern, Pa. – On another summer day worthy of a postcard, the National Car Rental Pro-Scratch Championship was played at Applebrook Golf Club. This annual event pairs one PGA Professional with one amateur golfer in a better ball of partners event.

Playing in the tournament’s first group, the team of John Lynch (Cripple Creek Country Club) and his partner Jay Whitby, two-time defending champions, put up an intimidating number for the rest of the field to try and beat. Lynch and Whitby carded a team score of 6-under-par (65). The duo made their way to the clubhouse lead by carding seven birdies, however an untimely bogey on the difficult par-4 18th prevented them from playing a flawless round.

As play continued it looked as though the only other team that would join the early leaders would be the pairing of host professional Dave McNabb (Applebrook Golf Club) and his partner Chris Lawler. The team played a bogey-free round of golf en route to a team score of 6-under-par (65) and a first place tie. McNabb and Lawler played their opening nine holes in 4-under but were unable to duplicate the score on the inward nine.

With the exception of amateur Chris Lawler these two teams were the same teams that finished at the top of the leaderboard at the 2015 Pro-Scratch Championship. However, we would not have repeat champions at the 2016 event.

Playing in the tournament’s final pairing, the team of Shawn Hall (Radley Run Country Club) and his partner Stuart Carrihill caught lightening in a bottle over their final nine holes and edged out the teams at 6-under-par by one shot. Hall and Carrihill made the turn at 1-under-par but with a combined six team birdies the duo finished the day at 7-under-par (64) and claimed the top spot at this year’s tournament.

The Section would like to thank our partner for this event, National Car Rental. The next event on the Philadelphia PGA schedule is the Pro-Junior Championship at Spring Ford Country Club on Thursday, July 21.

Ingraham Returns to Winner’s Circle at William Hyndman, III Memorial Classic

HUNTINGDON VALLEY, Pa. – After a week away, the Philadelphia PGA resumed tournament action with the annual William Hyndman, III Memorial Classic played at its traditional home, Huntingdon Valley Country Club. This year’s event brought together more than 100 Philadelphia PGA’s Professionals to play in the season’s seventh Omega Player of the Year, presented by Haverford Trust Co., points event. The tournament, named in honor of the legendary amateur golfer of the same name, also served as a stroke play event for the Philadelphia Assistants’ Organization (PAO).

Playing in the tournament’s morning wave, Rich Steinmetz (Spring Ford Country Club) set the tournament’s early pace. After starting on the 10th hole, Steinmetz made the turn at 1-over-par. However Steinmetz was able to right the ship with a birdie on hole #1 before adding another birdie on hole #9, his final hole of the day, to finish his round at 1-under-par (69).

No other player was able to match Steinmetz at the top of the leaderboard after the morning wave so, as the tournament turned to the afternoon wave, Steinmetz would have to leaderboard watch to see if his number would hold up.

As group after group finished in the afternoon it looked as though Steinmetz would hold on for the win. However, with only two groups left to play, Stu Ingraham (M Golf Range) was able to post a near perfect round of golf to earn his first win of the 2016 season. After an early bogey, Ingraham carded four birdies to post a total score of 3-under-par (67) giving him a 2-shot victory.

Ingraham had some close calls earlier this season coming up just short in a playoff at the Connelly Cup – Head Professional Championship as well as a second place finish at the Jack Jolly / Golf Pride Championship. This year’s William Hyndman, III Memorial Classic win was Ingraham’s third of his career having previously won in 2007 and 2011.

“This has been a very unique year for me on the golf course,” commented tournament champion Stu Ingraham. “There have been tournaments when I have been on top of my game and tournaments when I have struggled. Luckily for me, today was a good day. The changes they have made to this golf course over the years have really helped it become one of my favorite courses in our section.”

Ingraham also finished in the top spot in the tournament’s senior division having edged out second place finisher Dave Quinn (Links Golf Club) by 2-shots.

Although coming up a few shots short in the main event both Mike Meisenzhal (Shore Gate Golf Club) and Zac Oakley (Heritage Shores Golf Club) were able to claim a share of the top spot in the Philadelphia Assistants’ Organization event. Meisenzhal and Oakley both shot even par (70) which was good enough for a 1-shot victory over Andrew Turner (Whitford Country Club) and Ashley Grier (Overbrook Golf Club). The win was a first for both players in the 2016 PAO .

The Section would like to thank our tournament sponsors The Hyndman Family, Jack Jolly & Son, Golf Pride. There will be no break on the Philadelphia PGA tournament calendar as the next event, the Pro-Scratch Championship, will be played on Tuesday, July 12 at Applebrook Golf Club.

About William Hyndman, III

William Hyndman, III was one of the most accomplished amateur golfers in the history of the sport. Hyndman’s golfing accolades started at a young age winning the 1935 Philadelphia Amateur at the age of 19. However, that was only the start of Hyndman’s presence on the Philadelphia golf scene. Hyndman accumulated three Philadelphia Amateur titles, ten Patterson Cup crowns, and six Silver Crosses. Hyndman also had nine Masters Appearances and to this day is one of only three people to record a hole-in-one on the legendary par-3 12th at Augusta National. By the time Hyndman ended his golfing career he had competed in 50 USGA Championships, including being a member of five Walker Cup teams as well as two US Senior Amateur titles. Hyndman maintain his golfing prowess even at the age of 76 when he carded a 4-under-par (66) at Huntingdon Valley CC.
