Patrick Shine Elected Philadelphia PGA Section President

Lafayette Hill, Pa. (October 25, 2021) — PGA Member Patrick Shine of Commonwealth National Golf Club in Horsham, Pa., was elected 44th Philadelphia PGA President at the Section’s 2021 Fall Membership Meeting at Green Valley Country Club, its first in-person meeting since October 2019, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Chip Richter of the Country Club of Harrisburg in Harrisburg, Pa., and Bob Hennefer of Laurel Creek Country Club in Mount Laurel, N.J., join Shine as Section officers, being elected as Vice President and Secretary, respectively. Jeff Kiddie of Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square, Pa., moves to the role of Honorary President following his two-year stint as president.

The membership also selected Dustin McCormick, Glen Brook C.C., as Director of Section Affairs, while also appointing Eric Kennedy, Overbrook G.C., a second term as Director of Tournaments. Kevin Duffy, Riverton C.C.; Jason Gebhart, The Bridges G.C.; and Brett Nelson, Moselem Springs G.C.; were also elected to second terms as directors of Districts 1, 3, and 5, respectively. The board of directors and Executive Director Geoff Surrette also thanked outgoing independent directors Binney Wietlisbch and Tom Conery for their service.

The Section’s playing awards were also formally announced during the meeting and included:

  • Rolex Robert “Skee” Riegel Senior Player of the Year:
    Dave McNabb, PGA, Applebrook G.C.
  • Super Senior Player of the Year:
    Brian Kelly, PGA, Bucknell G.C.
  • F. Edward DeBaufre Trophy for Scoring Average:
    Zac Oakley, PGA, Bidermann G.C.
  • Comeback Player of the Year:
    Mike Moses, PGA, Concord C.C.
  • Ike Turner Most Improved Player:
    Braden Shattuck, PGA, Bidermann G.C.
  • Philadelphia Assistants’ Organization Player of the Year:
    Brian Bergstol, PGA, Shawnee Inn & Golf Resort
Following the meeting, 68 PGA Professionals teed it up in the Fall Meeting’s two-person scramble, with Pine Valley G.C.’s Chad Ferguson and Steve Sanderson taking the top spot at 12-under-par. The Pine Valley’s 59 was three strokes better than second place finishers Anthony Hoffman, John F. Byrne G.C., and Rocco Sgrillo Blue Bell C.C.; and Jeff Herb, Waynesborough C.C., and Patrick Butkus Tavistock C.C.

Perhaps the highlight of the round was PGA Member Rick Flagler’s first-ever hole-in-one on his first swing of the day, on the 139-yard par-3 eighth hole, with a pitching wedge. Congratulations, Rick!
