Westampton, N.J. – On Monday, June 6, the second round of the 31st Burlington Classic was held at Burlington Country Club. This annual event brings together the Section’s top PGA Professionals as well as amateur players from Burlington Country Club. The first day of the tournament is a Pro-Am pairing three members of Burlington CC with two PGA Professionals. This years Pro-Am field was the biggest ever, with forty-five teams and 225 players. The Professionals, along with the top two or three amateurs, then return on day two to complete the 36-hole Individual event.
“The Burlington Classic is a great celebration of the club, its membership and the PGA Professionals of the Philadelphia Section”, said John Hanuscin, Burlington Classic Tournament Chairman.
After an opening round 6-under-par (64), Chris Krueger (Kings Creek CC) held a slim one shot lead over the rest of the field. However, with a number of competitors within striking distance the tournament would not be decided until the final putt was sunk. Adding even more drama to the tournament came as the pro-am had an hour storm delay with seven teams yet to finish their round. As luck would have it play was finished before dark and the second round stage was set.
Krueger couldn’t seem to get anything going on the front nine and only managed to shoot even par with one birdie and one bogey while Mark Sheftic (Merion GC), who started the day two shots behind, managed 3 birdies with no bogies to take the lead by a shot.
As the leaders made their way around the back nine, Sheftic clung to the one shot lead as fewer and fewer holes were left to play. Stu Ingraham (M Golf Range) tried to join the party getting it to 5-under but doubled the last hole to finish out of contention.
When the final shot was holed, Sheftic had not only held onto the lead but widened it to three shots when Krueger stumbled on the 17th hole posting his second bogey on the back nine. Krueger ended up tied for second place with Barry Dear (Twisted Dune) when Barry holed a birdie putt on the last hole.
Sheftic credited his good putting for the win, adding his thanks to Superintendent Brian Minemier stating that the course was in perfect condition. With the National PPC coming up his thought process was to get into contention in this Bonus Points event to test his nerves for the big event to come at the end of June.
Congratulations to amateur T J Brennan who was awarded the Marotto Medal as the tournament’s low amateur. With a 36-hole total of 17-over-par (157), Brennan tied Travis Mazurek but managed a par on the second play-off hole to win the coveted amateur title.
The Section would like to thank the membership and staff of Burlington Country Club as well as tournament sponsors Taylormade and Adidas golf. The next event on the Philadelphia PGA tournament calendar is the National Car Rental AC Team Stableford Championship at Hidden Creek on Thursday, June 9.

Flourtown, Pa. – One day removed from Memorial Day and the unofficial start of summer, 138 Philadelphia PGA Professionals and 12 amateurs descended on Sunnybrook Golf Club for the 20th Haverford Philadelphia PGA Classic. This annual event is always a Philadelphia PGA favorite as it boasts the largest first place prize in the Section…$100,000.
In the morning wave a pair of players looked to be in prime position to capture this year’s event. This first to do so was Andrew Turner a PGA Assistant Professional from Whitford Country Club. Turner made his way around the par72 6800 yards long golf course at 3-under-par (69). Turner played his first nine holes bogey-free while adding two birdies. As Turner made his way to the back nine he eagled the par5 10th hole to quickly reach 4-under-par. However from that point forward Turner finished with two bogeys and only one birdie ultimately dropping him to his 3-under-par number.
Playing not far behind Turner, defending Philadelphia PGA Professional Champion Dave McNabb of Applebrook Golf Club was able to play a near perfect round of golf and finish two shots ahead of Turner. After an early bogey on the second hole, his only blemish of the day, McNabb went on to birdie six holes and finish with a score of 5-under-par (67). McNabb had back-to-back birdies on holes 3 & 4 as well as hole 9 & 10. After missing a few opportunities on some of the inward holes, McNabb was able to add birdies on the par3 15th before finishing with a birdie on the closing hole in front of the tournament’s gallery gathered on the veranda of Sunnybrook Golf Club’s clubhouse.
“I had been playing really well leading into today’s event and was very comfortable with where my game was headed,” commented McNabb on his round at the Haverford Philadelphia PGA Classic. “I was able to overcome an early bogey on the second hole and from that point forward had it going pretty good. This is definitely one of my biggest accomplishments and I’m looking forward to continuing this momentum into the upcoming events.”
As the tournament turned to the afternoon a few players threatened to make a run at McNabb and the top of the leaderboard but ultimately fell short. In the end the closest anyone in the afternoon wave was able to get to McNabb was the score of 1-under-par (71) posted by Jakob Gerney of Trump National – Philadelphia.
The win was McNabb’s first of the 2016 season and also his first as a newly minted Philadelphia Senior PGA Professional.
In the amateur division, a pair of players posted impressive scores of 1-over-par (73). Both Gary Shoeman and Francis Vaughn carded the number and will share the top amateur prize.
On a special note, Jason Calhoun from LaSalle University carded what is believed to be the tournament’s first hole-in-one on the par3 5th hole.
As always the members of the Philadelphia PGA would like to thank Mr. George Connell and the Haverford Trust Company as well as the membership of Sunnybrook Golf Club for their tremendous support of this event.

Mount Laurel, N.J – The Laurel Creek Classic was played on Monday, May 23 at Laurel Creek Country Club. The one-day individual stroke play event featured more than 100 Philadelphia PGA Professionals. Despite the early tournament sunshine players near the end of the field had to contend with a 1-hour weather delay before completing their rounds.
The first player to break away from the field was John Appleget (Wildwood G&CC) who posted a score of 3-under-par (68). Appleget posted four birdies through his first ten holes before stumbling on holes ten and eleven with a double bogey and bogey. Appleget was able to right the ship with a birdie on the par-3 fourteenth before closing with impressive birdie on the difficult closing hole.
As play continued, more than an hour went by before anyone was able to match Appleget at the top of the leaderboard. However, section newcomer Bob Heintz (University of Pennsylvania) was able to join Appleget at 3-under-par (68) after carding five birdies against only two bogeys. Heintz made all of his birdies during a seven hole stretch between holes 5-11.
The weather that threatened the tournament throughout the afternoon finally wreaked havoc as severe weather caused a more than one hour weather delay late in the day.
When play resumed one player was able to surge ahead of the leaders and take control of the tournament. Playing in the next to last group Mike Furey (Mahoning Valley Country Club) played a near flawless round of golf en route to a tournament winning score of 5-under-par (66). Furey carded six birdies, three on each nine, and only one bogey, which came on the difficult par-3 seventeenth hole to capture his first Philadelphia PGA tournament win.
“It feels great to get this win today”, said Furey about his first Philadelphia PGA tournament win. “I played really good today and putted even better. I think the weather delay worked to my advantage and help to calm my nerves. I hoping I can take this momentum into the next week and the rest of the year.”
Appleget did take home the top prize in the tournament’s senior division, marking his first senior win of the 2016 season. Appleget managed to beat second place finisher Bob Lennon (Wilmington Country Club) by two-strokes after Lennon posted a 1-under-par (70). Rounding out the top three in the senior division was George Forster (Radnor Valley Country Club) who carded an even par (71) early in the day.
Immediately following today’s tournament, Forster headed to Benton Harbor, Michigan and The Golf Club at Harbor Shores to prepare this weekend’s 77th Senior PGA Championship presented by KitchenAid. Forster will be joined by fellow Philadelphia Senior PGA Professionals Stu Ingraham (M Golf Range) and Brian Kelly (Bucknell Golf Club).
The Professionals of the Philadelphia PGA would like to thank event sponsors TaylorMade Golf and Mr. Mark Krahe, Adidas Golf and Mr. Tom Kelly, PGA, as well as our partners from Evolve Golf. The next event on the Philadelphia PGA calendar is the prestigious Haverford Trust Philadelphia PGA Classic schedule for Tuesday, May 31. The top prize for this annual event is $100,000.

Allentown, Pa. – Once again Lehigh Country Club played host to the first of two Philadelphia PGA Pro-Lady Team Championships. On Tuesday, May 17, 43 teams all featuring one PGA Professional and three female amateurs gathered at the William Flynn-designed course to compete in the better ball of partners event. The Spring Pro-Lady Team Championship featured both a Gross and Net division.
Early in the tournament it looked as though the winning team may have come from the tournament’s first pairing. The team featuring George Forster (Radnor Valley CC) and partners Ellen Berlinger, Cindy Farruggio, and Sue Meckling combined to shoot a team score of 11-under-par (59). The group carded nine birdies and one net eagle to set the pace early in the day.
However before the day was done the group was joined at 11-under-par by the team of Bill Sautter (Philadelphia Cricket Club) and his partners Carol Finger, Becky Frazier, and Nancy Phillips. Also finishing at 11-under-par was team featuring host Professional Wayne Phillips (Lehigh Country Club) and his partners Denise Hobbie, Barb Bennicoff, and Barb Brodsky. The paring of Kevin Edwards (Woodstone Country Club) and his partners Donna D’Amore, Suzy Armbruster, and Tammy Abernathy were also able to finish at 11-under-par. The final team to reach 11-under-par was the team John Allen (Huntingdon Valley Country Club) and his partners Shannon Reilly, Judy Leighton, and Lisa Fazio.
Although as the day went on it became clear that none of the teams at 11-under-par would post the winning score. Early in the afternoon wave the team featuring John Bierkan (Aronimink Golf Club) and his partners Lynne Jones, Lisa Hummer, and Liz Finley were able to post a score 1-shot better and finish at 12-under-par (58). They were quickly joined by the team of Tom Koenig (Penn Oaks Golf Club) and his partners Donna Dalusio, Tina Landis, and Joan Skivo. Also finishing in a tie for second place was Sean Williams (Lehigh Country Club) and partners Joy Wallace, Barb Barry, and Suzi Lentz. The fourth and final team to finish at 12-under-par was the group featuring Rick LeBeau (Gulph Mills Golf Club) and his partners Maggie Condon, Scilia Smith, and Dina Gibson.
In the end one team managed to best the field and claim the tournament’s top prize. Steve Frederick (Lehigh Country Club) and his partners Mo Bryan, Erica Hyman, and Linda Epstein carded an impressive 15-under-par (55) to win by 3-shots. The team finished with eleven birdies and two eagles claiming the season’s first Pro-Lady Team event. With the exception of amateur Mo Bryan this Lehigh team was the same team that claimed a share of the title in 2015.
In the Gross Division the team from Merion Golf Club featuring PGA Professional Matthew Walbert and his partners Liz Haines, Loraine Jones, and Christie Tallent led wire-to-wire with a score of 5-under-par to finish 1-shot clear of the second place finishers. The team carded six birdies and only one bogey to claim the top spot.
The Section would like to thank our tournament sponsor Volvik and Mr. Chris Terebesi as well as the members and staff of Lehigh Country Club for their support. The next event on the Philadelphia PGA calendar is The Laurel Creek Classic scheduled for Monday, May 23 at Laurel Creek Country Club.

Avondale, Pa. – On a day when the weather was more suited for early spring than mid-May, more than 50 teams featuring more than 100 Philadelphia PGA Professionals competed in the Spring Pro-Pro Championship at Hartefeld National Golf Club, in Avondale, Pa. This marked the first time the Philadelphia PGA visited Hartefeld National GC since the course hosted 2009 Philadelphia PGA Assistants Championship. Despite the weather, the 6500 yards long golf course was in near perfect condition for the better ball of partners’ event.
Playing early in the day the pair of Jamie Komancheck (Rivercrest GC & Preserve) and Pete Kowalinski (Dunning Golf) posted an impressive score of 5-under-par (67). The duo carded a total of eight team birdies with each contributing at least three to the team total. However a pair of untimely bogeys on holes eleven and twelve prevented them from posting an even more impressive number.
Matching Komancheck and Kowalinski at 5-under-par (67) was the team of Steve Swartz (Country Club of Harrisburg) and Joe Kogelman (GolfTEC Moorestown). Komancheck and Swartz, 2015 Fall Pro-Pro champions, combined for eight birdies against only three bogeys to reach the number.
Unfortunately for both teams at 5-under-par, the pair of Bill Sautter (Philadelphia Cricket Club) and John Spina (Philadelphia Cricket Club) was able to best them by one shot. As a team the combo played flawlessly adding six birdies to finish at 6-under-par (65). Sitting at 4-under-par on the 17th hole, Sautter and Spina managed to birdie their final two holes to grab the lead at 6-under-par.
However playing in the next to last group the team of Mike Meisenzhal (Shore Gate CC) and David Morano (Hidden Creek GC) were able to overcome both the field and the windy conditions to post the low round of the day, an 8-under-par (64). The pair combined for a total of eleven birdies, including six on their back nine to finish two shots clear of the field and capture the 2016 Spring Pro-Pro title.
Special congratulations to Tom Carpus (Kennett Square Golf & CC) on recording a hole-in-one on the par 3 second hole at Hartefeld National GC. Carpus used a 7-iron on the 145 yard long hole to accomplish the feat in the tournament, his second tournament hole-in-one.
The Section would like to thank our Spring Pro-Pro Championship sponsors Ahead, and PTE Golf. The Philadelphia PGA will resume tournament action tomorrow, May 17, at Lehigh Country Club for the annual Spring Pro-Lady Team Championship.

Under clear blue skies and near perfect temperatures the second installment of the Oakley Skull Cup Pro-Am was played at Galloway National Golf Club. The event pairs together one PGA Professional and one amateur in the better ball of partners event. All amateur are playing to 80% of their handicaps.
With the Oakley Skull Cup Pro-Am played as a shotgun event scores were coming in fast and furious at the end of the day. However, one of the first team to finish their rounds posted an impressive score of 7-under-par (64). Bob Hennefer (Indian Spring Golf Club) and his partner Matt Jugan combined for nine birdies against only two bogeys to claim the early lead. The pair was quickly joined at 7-under-par by the team of Dave Quinn (Links Golf Club) and his amateur partner Ed Quinn. The duo combined for the most team birdies in the field (10) but some unfortunate bogeys kept them from posting an even better number.
However, as scores continued to stream in the team featuring Ron Pine (Whitemarsh Valley Country Club) and his partner Chuck Lynch posted a score of 8-under-par (63) to jump into the lead. Pine and Lynch carded seven birdies and one eagle but an untimely bogey on the par4 12th hole kept them from having a flawless round and ultimately a share of the win.
Riding a wave of great play from both teammates one team was able to best the field and post a winning score of 9-under-par (62) to claim the tournament’s top spot. Curtis Kirkpatrick (Indian Spring Golf Club) and his amateur partner Harold Morgan combined for nine team birdies and one eagle. Their outstanding play helped them overcome their two bogeys and earn the one-shot win.
The Philadelphia PGA would like to thank our title sponsor Oakley and Ralph Viola as well as Pinelands Brewing Co. and Nick Brown and John Kugler for their support of this event. The Philadelphia PGA also thanks the membership of Galloway National Golf Club and PGA Director of Golf Jason Lamp for their hospitality. The next event of the Philadelphia PGA tournament calendar is the Haverford Philadelphia PGA Classic on Tuesday, May 31 at Sunnybrook GC.

Concordville, Pa. – On Monday May 9, the Philadelphia PGA returned to Concord Country Club for the 2016 edition of the Delaware Valley Open (DVO). The DVO featured nearly 120 Philadelphia PGA Professionals and served as a dual event with the Philadelphia PGA’s Assistant’s Organization (PAO).
Despite the forecast of sunny skies and 70 degree temperatures, players competing in today’s tournament were faced with cool blustery conditions as the morning turned to afternoon. However, one player managed to get his round complete before the winds picked up and posted a score that lasted from start to finish. Mike Little (Lookaway Golf Club) who played in the tournament’s first group, carded an impressive 4-under-par (67). Little played a near perfect round of golf posting five birdies against only one bogey to finish two shots clear of his closest competitor Mike Meisenzhal (Shore Gate Golf Club) who finished at 2-under-par (69). Meisenzhal managed to overcome the windy conditions that plagued the field throughout the afternoon. Rounding out the top three were George Forster (Radnor Valley Country Club) and Stu Ingraham (M Golf Range) who each carded a 1-under-par (70).
“I think playing early was definitely an advantage as I was able to get ahead of the windy conditions that came through in the afternoon”, said DVO champion Mike Little. “I putted great and was able to take advantage of the opportunities that I had throughout the day. I want to thank the staff and members of Concord CC for hosting us today as well as Dennis McGugan and his team at Jack Jolly and Son for supporting this tournament. I would be remiss if I didn’t thank my family, especially my wife Star and everyone at Lookaway Golf Club for the support they have given me.”
Like 2015 champion Colin Corrigan, as the tournament’s overall champion, Little also claimed the top spot in DVO PAO tournament giving him two victories on the day.
Although they finished just short to overall champion Little, Forster and Ingraham were able to share the top spot in tournament’s Senior Division. The pair finished two-shots ahead of third place finisher Greg Farrow (Deerfield Country Club) who finished the day at 1-over-par (72).
Special congratulations to John Spina (Philadelphia Cricket Club) on his first career tournament hole-in-one. Spina used a 3-hybrid on the difficult par3 4th (235yds) to accomplish the feat.
The Section would like to thank our tournament sponsors Jack Jolly & Son, Golf Pride Grips, and the PGA Tour. The Philadelphia PGA will return to tournament action on Monday, May 16 at Hartefeld National Golf Club for the Spring Pro-Pro Championship.

Greenville, Del. – The Philadelphia PGA held their annual Connelly Cup – Head Professional Championship at Fieldstone Golf Club on Monday, May 2. This annual tournament is named in honor of Jack Connelly a past President of both the Philadelphia PGA and the PGA of America. This year’s event brought together more than 50 of the Section’s Head Professionals and despite a chilly and overcast start, the tournament finished under blue skies.
Today’s tournament was played as a shotgun allowing all players to start their rounds at the same time. As the tournament concluded and players started to turn in their cards, two players were able to separate themselves from the field. Stu Ingraham (M Golf Range) and Dave McNabb (Applebrook Golf Club) each posted a tournament best 4-under-par (67) meaning the 2016 edition of the Connelly Cup would be decided with a playoff.
Ingraham reach 4-under-par by playing a bogey-free round while adding three birdies on the front nine and adding a fourth on the par-3 16th. McNabb was able to get to 4-under-par by carding five birdies against only one bogey. McNabb got off to torrid start with birdies on his first three holes.
Needing to break the tie both Ingraham and McNabb headed back out to the 18th tee box for the start of the sudden death playoff. Both Ingraham and McNabb posted a par on the first playoff hole forcing the tournament into a second sudden death hole. After hitting his approach shot only a few feet from the pin McNabb was able to make his birdie putt securing his first tournament win of the 2016 season.
“This is a place where I feel very comfortable and I definitely have some good memories here after last year’s Championship,” commented 2016 Connelly Cup champion McNabb. “I started off with three straight birdies and that definitely got me into a groove. I made some great putts and couldn’t have asked for a better pairing for today’s round.”
All was not lost for Ingraham as he was able to capture the tournament’s Senior division title.
Finishing just one shot off the lead in solo third place was George Forster (Radnor Valley Country Club). Starting on the sixth hole, Forster carded two quick birdies on holes seven and eight. Forster also added birdies on the second and seventeenth holes. Unfortunately for Forster a bogey on the par-4 fourteenth kept him out of the playoff.
Special congratulations to Hugh Matthis (Tavistock Country Club) on recording his first career hole-in-one. Matthis accomplished the feat on the difficult par-3 13th hole by hitting a 6-iron on the 190 yards long hole.
The Section would like to thank all of our tournament sponsors, Bushnell, Pukka and section Representative Jim Ravina, Country Club Editions and Kurt Shenk as well as new Philadelphia PGA sponsor Weatherbug. The next tournament on the Philadelphia PGA calendar is the Delaware Valley Open (DVO) on Monday, May 9 at Concord Country Club. BlueGolf News
