Braden Shattuck Wins 2021 GALV Lehigh Valley Open in Sudden Death Playoff

Easton, Pa. (July 20, 2021) — Philadelphia PGA Professional Braden Shattuck birdied No. 18 twice in a sudden death playoff to win the 2021 GALV Lehigh Valley Open at Northampton C.C., finishing at 9-under-par for the championship (69-66–135).

Shattuck bettered PGA Member Brett Walker, Sunnybrook G.C., and amateur Zach Juhasz, a Northampton C.C. member, in the playoff. Opening round leader Juhasz made par on the first playoff hole, a driveable par-4, the 315-yard 18th, and was eliminated following the birdies made by Shattuck and Walker. Both of the remaining competitors drove 18 on the second playoff hole, each finding the first tier of the steep two-tiered green. Shattuck nearly made his eagle putt, missing by inches, resulting in a tap-in birdie. Walker missed his approximate four-foot birdie putt, with Shattuck securing the win.

“I liked the course a lot. I loved the greens, which reminded me of Concord C.C.’s greens, where I grew up playing,” said Shattuck. “I love a golf course like this that provides a variety of shot options. This week, I didn’t hit my driver very well, but hit a lot of irons, even on the par-5s, and still made birdies.”

Shattuck went on to thank Bidermann G.C., its members and staff, including PGA Head Professional Anthony Malizia, Titleist, sales representative Jerry McGoey, and his girlfriend Cat Hammer for helping him with his on-course diet.

Shattuck won the 2021 Burlington Classic in June, and tied for first in the weather-shortened 2021 Conestoga Classic.

The event’s leaderboard was tight all day, with 11 additional players finishing within five strokes of the champion. Following second place finishers Walker and Juhasz, Alex Knoll, Glen Brook G.C., finished in fourth place at 7-under-par, while Mike Furey, Saucon Valley C.C., and John Pillar, C.C. at Woodloch Springs, tied for fifth at 6-under.

Pillar won the Senior Division by three strokes over Eddie Perrino, Eagle Rock Resort, and Dave McNabb, Applebrook G.C. Brian Kelly, Bucknell G.C., took the Super Senior Division at 2-over-par, bettering Rick Flesher, Lehigh C.C. by one.

Juhasz, the two-time defending club champion at the host club, Northampton C.C., finished as Low Amateur, bettering Tucker Sandercock of Bethlehem, Pa., by four strokes.

Easton, Pa. (July 19, 2021) — Amateur Zach Juhasz leads the Golf Association of Lehigh Valley’s 2021 Lehigh Valley Open by one stroke over Alex Knoll, PGA, finishing his opening round at Northampton Country Club at 6-under-par.

Juhasz, the two-time defending club champion at the host club, Northampton C.C., made seven birdies and a lone bogey to shoot his 66. In addition to his club championships, Juhasz has won five regional amateur major championships. He leads the Low Amateur race by two strokes over Andrew Adlard and three over Lee Nonnemacher. Each amateur is hoping to become the GALV Lehigh Valley Open’s second amateur champion, following Cole Miller’s win in 2017.

Glen Brook G.C.’s Alex Knoll made six birdies and eagled No. 11, alongside three bogeys to finish at 5-under-par. Knoll is looking to win this event for the second time, following his win in the inaugural Lehigh Valley Open in 2008. Seven players are tied for third place, two strokes behind Juhasz.

Dave McNabb, Applebrook G.C., and John Pillar, C.C. at Woodlcoh Springs, are tied atop the Senior Division at 4-under-par over. Jason Calhoun, University of Pennsylvania, is three strokes back. In the Super Senior Division, Flesher leads at even-par, two better than Brian Kelly, Bucknell G.C.

Bob Hennefer, PGA, Leads Team to Win 2021 Philadelphia PGA Professional-Junior Championship

Phoenixville, Pa. (July 8, 2021) — PGA Member Bob Hennefer, Laurel Creek C.C., teamed with junior amateurs Bobby Dominy, Matt Normand, and Tyler Smith to win the 2021 Philadelphia PGA Professional-Junior Championship at Rivercrest Golf Club & Preserve.

The format for the event was a three-player scramble amongst the youth golfers on the team. Each team’s PGA Professional had to play their own ball until holed, however, their youth teammates had the opportunity to play their approaches from their PGA Professional’s drives.

The strong competitive field did not appear to phase the Laurel Creek group, a team which won by five strokes with a final score of 55, 16-under-par. Sitting at 15-under-par on the final hole, Normand’s drive came within 100 yards of the green. His second shot landed within three feet of the hole, which allowed for an easy tap-in team birdie.

Saucon Valley C.C.’s Mike Furey, PGA, and his junior partners, Cohen Resch, Evan Eichenlaub, Colin Zavacky, finished in second place with a final score of 60. PGA Member Hugo Mazzalupi, Patriots Glen National G.C., in a group with his son, Shaun Mazzalupi, and Grayson Wingert, and Danny Dilella, finished tied for third place at 9-under-par with host PGA Professional Jamie Komancheck, and his team of Charlie Ferrise, Colby Komancheck, and Justin Lejeune.

The 2021 Philadelphia PGA Professional-Junior Championship is supported by the PGA Tour. The Philadelphia PGA Section and its PGA Professionals thank our partners, Rivercrest G.C. & Preserve, its membership, management, staff, and host PGA Professional staff, as the event would not have been possible without their support.

“The Philadelphia PGA is delighted to partner with Workhorse Brewing Company, an organization that is dedicated to not only to brewing great beer, but engaging with golfers in our region.” said Section Executive Director Geoff Surrette, PGA. “We believe that our partnership will encourage golfers to play more often, benefiting our facilities, and elevating the brands of the Section, PGA REACH Philadelphia, and the Workhorse Brewing Company.”

As part of the agreement, the Philadelphia PGA Section will promote the Workhorse Tour to amateur golfers in the area. The tour brings the competitive spirit and tournament format of professional golf to recreational players in Greater Philadelphia, with the bonus of flexible scheduling and real-time scoring powered by industry leader Golf Genius. “Since our inception, Workhorse has always sought unique ways to differentiate ourselves in the highly competitive world of craft beer,” said brewery Co-Founder and Tour General Manager Dan Hershberg. “The Workhorse Tour is a creative way to achieve that goal and by allowing for competitive golf to be played on a flexible schedule, it also helps solve a real problem for amateurs everywhere. We’re excited to be able to offer something of value to both golfers and our retail partners, and having the support of a terrific organization in the Philadelphia PGA gives us a tremendous opportunity to do just that.”
